Vocabulary ASS- Heavily armed units HE – High Explosive Rounds that blast through steel and concrete DPICM – Rounds that explode in air releasing smaller grenades to people below Rumors Major Events and Ideas: On March 24th seventy vehicles start to head into the city and most marines seem happy that they didn’t have to do the reaction mission. They then were watching a man who was walking in and out of a building on a cell phone. They were just waiting to open fire. Rumors started to spread that Iraqi pretended to surrender yesterday, however it was fake and they then opened fire on the marines. The media heard about this and it started to spread. Some men who were said to have been there denied that this even happened. That night then then see headlights approaching them, then get their weapons and stop the vans. They find that the people in the van are said to be doctors and civilians that are wounded. They are driving to a hospital since they can’t get treated in Nasiriyah. They let the vans pass but warn them they may get killed by marines thinking they are enemies. Fick then briefs his men about the city telling them that the last marines that went through were being shot at with RPG’s and that he wants the weapons ready. That night Espera and …. Share a cigarette and Espera tells him that he now wishes he didn’t re-enlist. This is because he doesn’t like killing kids. We find out that Colbert actually has feelings as he was engaged to his junior high school sweetheart. Weird enough he is still friends with her after she married his friend. They then start shooting the artillery towards Nasiriyah and this goes on for about 36 hours. They shoot more than 2,000 rounds into the city of 400,000 residents. The damage must be high. We then learn about presidents Bush’s speech on February 15, 1991 when he asked the citizens of Nasiriyah to force Saddam Hussein into submission. That next morning Gunny announces that they will be moving going into at dawn. This is no surprise as in war things are always delayed. Connections: Rumors spread in the military just as they do in workplaces. This shows that they do communicate and relate to one another due to rumors spreading. This connects the group of guys and as we talked about people want to feel connected and associated to a group.

Chapter 11 Vocabulary:  Anticipation  Excitement

Luck

Major Events:  March 25 the men load up to finally invade the city. Many got little sleep due to the anticipation.  As they drive up to the city they seem marines in gas masks, gesturing for them to put theirs on. Colbert refuses as he see birds flying overhead.  As they approach they pass many blow up vehicles as well as their equipment.  The city is about 6 kilometers long and pretty well blown up.  While they are driving they stop as Alpha Company stopped to pick up a wounded marine. While they were stopped firing starts taking place. An RPG flies overhead and one driver gets shot by a sniper but luckily his vest protects him. The marines then start shooting their Mark-19 grenades into the buildings.  Some of the men are actually excited to be in combat because they can now fire back.  First Recon stays on route 7 after now leaving Nasiriya and heading for Al Kut.  On their way the convoy often stops to shoot at things on the side of the road such as huts, and berms.  First Recon along with the forces in this convoy are the first Americans in this part of Iraq.  Colbert then gets upset with Captain America because he is constantly saying his vehicle is under attack.  One guy who rides with Captain America states that he doesn’t think that he’s right in the head.  While traveling Alpha Company detects a BM-21 coming at them and has to call in an airstrike to take it out.  Pappy a sniper then shoots someone out in the field who had something shinny. He says he just hopes it was the right decision.  Corporal Michael is a Christian from First Recon Charlie Company and is helping with security while they are waiting for the airstrike. During this time a car starts approaching them so they fire warning rounds. However, they don’t stop and the marines have to take the enemies out. This was a new rule after last night’s van incident.  After the car explodes they can advance, during this time Trombly violates Colbert’s rule of no Charms because they are bad luck.

Connections: This chapter talks about how Trombly violates Colbert’s rule. This connects to organization communication because sometimes we think our bosses don’t know what they are doing, or that they are being stupid so we don’t listen. However, they are the leaders and we do need to follow their rules and commands. Chapter 12: Vocabulary: Decoy Commands Leader

Main Events: On March 25 First Recon has moved about twenty kilometers from the last town, Nasiriyah, Still no one knows why they are on Route 7. The order that they have now is to turn off the road onto a dirt road and follow that to a town called Al Gharraf. The marines in the lightly armored vehicles will first invade this area by themselves as the 6,000 troops of RCT-1 follow. The idea of this is to draw enemy fire on the small decoy of the 374 marines so that the big convoy doesn’t get hit. As they travel down the dirt road they wave to the supporting villagers and also feed the hungry, begging children. As they keep moving a storm hits, this dust storm throws the convoy off track, taking up time. Across from them they see RCT-1 in a village and it doesn’t look good. They are informed that people are fleeing because the enemy is setting up for an attack up ahead. Just a few minutes later gun fire breaks out. Once this happens they stop and Colbert get out and signals for the rest of them to get out and start shooting. During this Alpha and Charlie Company are being shot at from all around. They take cover as they try to find out where exactly it’s coming from. Capt. Patterson then locates the fire and calls in an airstrike even though it’s considered danger close. Through this confusion many people don’t know about the danger close airstrike and one of those is Corporal John Burris. A guy who could have done many other things than join the marines. After the airstrike hits the enemy fire stops and they wait for about an hour. During this time they see someone’s head popping up and down from a building. Right before firing Colbert yells don’t shoot, it’s a kid. After this they get try to find a way around the next town so they can meet up with RCT1. Connections: Colbert gets out first and then signals for the rest of them to get out. This is a great example of leadership. Instead of having someone else get out first, the leader, commander gets out first, sets the example and then the rest of the marines follow....
