COURSE DETAILS Calendar Description: This course introduces environmental geography through an integrative approach that explores how humans have impacted and been impacted by earth’s physical systems. Human linkages with the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and solid earth will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on geographical problems and interaction between humans and environment of varying scales in order to better understand the complexity of our natural world. Where appropriate, case studies will be used to highlight specific methods of geographical analysis. Format: Most classes will consist of lecture, occasionally with student participation, group exercises, and videos. Students are expected to take notes in preparation for forthcoming tests and fully participate in class activities. Textbook: T. Foresman and A. Strahler. 2012. Visualizing Physical Geography 2nd edition (Hoboken NJ: Wiley). The textbook is available in the campus bookstore. Other Materials: Occasionally you may be asked to review materials beyond the textbook in preparation for class. These materials, along with our weekly lectures, will be posted on the GEOG 1200 Brightspace Page. To access Brightspace, go to https://smu.brightspace.com/ and login. Learning Outcomes: • Gain an appreciation for the natural processes and relationships that operate within and between environments • Understand the basic principles and terminology of these natural processes that shape Earth’s atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere • Gain an appreciation and understanding of human-environment interactions • Understand how humans impact, and are impacted by, the natural environment
