Residential Care Terms ● Skilled nursing facilities ○ Skilled nursing facilities are geared more towards different types of services that are offered to the elderly. Their main difference from other nursing entities are that they are typically offering services to patients for short-term care. All services are under the supervision or care of certified professionals. The common populations that live in SNF’s are adults who are 65 and older. ● Nursing Home ○ Nursing homes are residential spaces that care for elderly peoples. These homes typically offer medical care, recreational activities, residential care, and other social services focused on elder care. Statistics have shown the common population for nursing homes are about 85 years or older. However, this is not limited to the young old population. They are different from other facilities as they offer high level non medical assistance in clinical settings. ● Assisted living community ○ Assisted living communities are facilities that provide more personal care to the elderly. These communities are also residential settings that give around-the-clock care for older adults. These communities my be distinguished from others as not just helping with adults going through the aging process, but also a focus on those with disabilities. The common population is these populations are within their 70s-80s. ● Community dwelling older adult ○ Community dwelling older adults are the terms to describe a population of elderly who live independently. This population typically consists of those above the age of 60 who suffer from different medical ailments. ● Instrumental Activities of Daily Living ○ IADLs are a set of criteria that describe the criteria which an older adult may perform during the day. These daily activities are more complex than the basic tasks like bathing and feeding. For instrumental activities, this includes tasks such as money handling, transportation, self shopping,managing medications, and more. IADL’s are typically developed through adolescent years. It is usually seen to decrease after the age of 74. ● Basic Activities of Daily Living ○ BADL’s are less complex than IADL’s, as they account for the basic tasks in daily living. Such as bathing, feeding, dressing oneself, walking, transport

to different areas. These tasks are typically developed during early childhood years and start to deteriorate after age 65....
