The short tale "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid is about a girl between childhood and maturity. Her mother teaches her to be a proper woman. She is the only one who can save the girl from a promiscuous life.She believes the child is nearly lost due to her behavior (Kincaid 4). The mother's voice dominates the story. Only twice does her daughter respond to her? The mother figure's words and instructions to her daughter reveal a lot about her nature. It also defines their connection. The mother educates her daughter about household etiquette. It shows her intelligence. She can live with others. Her family and society respect her—a vast understanding of domestic issues (Kincaid 4). She is also kind. A mother who cares for her daughter and cautions her against sexism Prevents appearing like the slut I know you are set on becoming, she adds (Kincaid 4).

The mother corrects her daughter whenever she says anything odd .It is not only the girl's mother. She tells the girl she must be a housekeeper. The mother expects no opposition from her kid. The girl was not allowed to choose whether or not to be domesticated (Kincaid 5).

She is a street mother who does not negotiate feminine respectability. A close reading of the

story shows the woman's age. She has outdated views about what a woman should be. She also believes a woman should be a housekeeper (Kincaid 3). She is involved in many problems both at home and in the community. She participates in community initiatives like fishing. However, she is cold. She tells the child to learn what her mother does. The mother does not let her daughter make choices. Instead, she instructs her (Kincaid 3).

The fact that the mother guides her daughter shows family affection. She has high hopes for the girl. The girl knows this. However, the mother's strict demands seem to frighten the girl (Kincaid 4). The two characters' connection is highly mechanical. For example, their dialogue is onesided. The daughter is calm and contemplative. The mother wants a clean daughter. She learned how to wash clothes, sweep the home and tidy up (Kincaid 3). She wants morality in her daughter. She teaches her appropriate sexual etiquette.

She demonstrates how to behave in front of guys. The goal is to get her a responsible spouse (Kincaid 3). Nevertheless, the girl feels cheated of her right to self-determination. She cannot make her own choices. However, what if the baker will not let me feel the bread? ( Kincaid 4). Her mother does not teach her to be a professional lady.

"Girl" by Kincaid is ironic. That her daughter would become a respected strong lady like her, she forgets that experience, not teaching, builds strength. She should let her kid make errors and learn from them....
