Description

ENG 3U1 - Unit 4 Activity 1: Effective Speaking Discussion 1. I believe that speaking with conviction is an important tone to use in order to convey your beliefs and persuade your target audience. By talking in a confident manner, listeners believe in what you have to say and are able to see your point of view. Speaking with conviction as well as eliminating “uptalk”, helps prove your points and shows off your stance on a particular subject. For example, in a class debate it is crucial for the speaker to speak with conviction, to show that they are confident in their arguments and to easily convince their peers to agree with their beliefs. Conviction is necessary to clearly and most effectively get your message across. On the other hand, I believe eliminating things like “uptalking” is not necessary in casual settings. For instance, when I am having a conversation with my friends, using “uptalking” in my voice is normal and it’s how we communicate. I do not need to speak in a strong voice because my friends can understand what I am trying to say. In conclusion, speaking with conviction is important to confidently carry your ideas across but it is not needed all the time, like when speaking with friends or family. 2. I feel that it is wrong to judge people’s ideas solely based on the quality of their voice because a person could have great points but they were shown disregard right from the moment they started speaking. People should not have a closed mind and deny someone's opinions just because of the way they translate their ideas into speech. Some people struggle with communicating their ideas effectively. So, we should listen to people’s ideas for the greatness they can hold, not the voice that it is said in. 3. Additional factors that contribute to effective speaking include: voice projection, clarity, gestures, and eye contact. Volume engages the audience more and shows that you are confident to present your points. Hand gestures are important in speaking effectively because they help emphasize certain parts in a speech and strengthens the speaker’s message. Finally, eye contact is the most important as it is a powerful way to connect with the audience. When you fail to make eye contact with the audience, they become uninterested because you look less believable and confident. All these factors play a big role in allowing the audience to fully comprehend and trust your message....
