METHOD: THE GRAMMAR-TRANSLATION METHOD



When, where & who  this method began to be used after the Industrial Revolution. It is not really known who the creator of this method was. This method appears in Europe.



Principles/current  the currents of the method are linguistic and pedagogical. The principles of the method are: -The students have the correct answer always. -The teacher is the authority. -Traditional. -Classical literature.



What for?  the aim was that students would become more familiar with the grammar of their native language and that this familiarity would help them speak and write their native language better.



Goal of the teacher  the teacher´s goal is that his students be able to read literature written in the target language. The students need to learn about the rules of grammar and vocabulary. The teacher was at the centre of everything.



Role of the teacher  The roles are very traditional. The teacher is the authority in the classroom.



Characteristics of the teaching learning process  students are taught to translate from one language into another. Student study grammar deductively and memorize target language vocabulary.



Student-teacher interactions /student-student interaction most of the interaction in the classroom is from the teacher to the students.



Feelings of the students  student´s feelings don´t matter.



Vision of language and culture  literary language is considered superior to spoken language and is therefore the language the student’s study. Culture is viewed as consisting of literature and the fine arts.



Emphasized areas of language /Emphasized skills  the areas of language that emphasized are vocabulary and grammar. Reading and writing are the primary skills that the students work on, less attention given to speaking and listening and pronunciation receives little or any attention. Reading grammar and translation.



Role of the students’ native language  the roles are very traditional, the students so as she says so they can learn what she knows.



Evaluation  the evaluation consist of written tests in which students are asked to translate from their native language into the target language. Questions about the target language or questions for apply grammar rules.



Teacher response to students’ errors  if students make errors or do not know an answer, the teacher supplies them with the correct answer.



Criticisms  teacher center, teacher authority, translation is not satisfaction.
