“The Grapes of Wrath” Discussion Questions

1.Why does the book start with drought and end with floods? The book starts with droughts and end with floods because in the beginning “The Great Depression” was taking place which caused the economy to become low, weather to change, crops to go bad etc. The book ends with floods because it begins to rain again and “The Great Depression” is over which brings a sense of joy and relief. 2.Why does Steinbeck devote a chapter to the land turtle's progress on the highway? Steinbeck devotes a chapter to the land turtle’s progress on the highway because he was a significant character in the book and was an inspiration. The land turtle’s debuts the challenges and trials that Tom and the preacher had to go through to reach their potential and make a change. 3.Why does Steinbeck interrupt the Joads narrative with short chapters of commentary and description? Steinbeck interrupt the Joads narrative with short chapters of commentary to show progress and where things are taken place in the moment. Also the narratives revert back to hidden clues in the book that provides answers in the end. 4.Does nature function as a force for either good or evil in this book? Nature functions as a force of good in this book because Tom ends up meeting the preacher who helped him, well they helped one another through life and provided one another with guidance and help throughout the great depression and let one another towards their destinations. 5.Casey tells Tom about a prisoner whose view of history is that "every time they's a little step forward, she may slip back a little, but she never slips clear back.... They wasn't no waste.” Do you agree with this view? Yes, I agree with this view because it goes to show you that one may revert back to their old ways but they won’t fully fall back into their old habits. They have learned from their mistakes and are willing to make a change but they know the consequences that can come with it....
