Temple University Eating Cultures Stone Researcher: Alex Fortebuono Date of Visit: 29 October 2017 Time of Visit: 5:30pm Name and Type of Establishment: Fresh Grocer – Grocery Store Address: 1501 N Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122

I chose to go to Fresh Grocer because how convenience it is. Fresh Grocer is located right on campus for the convenience of Temple students. Even if you do not live near Fresh Grover, it is easily accessible by taking the Broad Street Train Line and getting off at Cecil B Moore Station, and Fresh Grocer is only one block away. Even though the grocery store is on campus, the grocery store is located in Northern Philadelphia, which is mainly populated with the lower class. Majority of the people in this neighborhood rely on food stamps. When I went to Fresh Grocer I had to buy some fruits and vegetables and some cleaning supplies. Fresh Grocer’s name is contradicting because their produce is not fresh at all. I love berries and I can never find any raspberries, strawberries, or

blueberries that do not have mold on them or look like they are about to go bad. Also with some of their vegetables. I also think Fresh Grocer is extremely overpriced. I try to avoid going to Fresh Grocer just because of their pricing. Also, due to Philadelphia’s sugar tax, a lot of their juices and sodas are more expensive. I have also observed that a lot of their unhealthy foods; such as frozen mini pizzas, hot pockets, and other ‘college foods’ (typically foods you can microwave), are extremely cheap. On the other hand, healthy foods; such as the fruits and vegetables, are extremely expensive and they are not even fresh or safe looking to eat. Overall, I avoid going to Fresh Grocer as much as possible. I do not like their produce and especially their pricing. I much rather take an Uber to South Philadelphia to go to an ACME or any other grocery store to make sure my produce is fresh and I am saving my money....
