MGMT 735, Spring 2021 Group Case 1 - TopCoder (A): Developing Software through Crowdsourcing Group 1 will lead the class through the following discussion questions: 1. Describe TopCoder’s unconventional business model. In particular, how does this business model differ from conventional software development business? What might be the motivations behind this innovative business model? 2. What might be some concerns TopCoder’s target clients might have with this unusual business model? And what is TopCoder doing to address these concerns? 3. TopCoder is essentially a platform operator. We know that platform is about multi-sided market. What are the various sides in TopCoder’s platform? Are there same-side and cross-side network effects? 4. What changes are required to allow TopCoder to achieve 10X current revenues? 5. In your opinion, what is TopCoder’s core competence? (Note: remember there is a precise definition for core competence. We covered that in the beginning of the semester. Do not use the sloppy, casual interpretation of core competence we see all around popular business press.) 6. Perform an update research. What happened to TopCoder since the case was written. What surprised you? Note: The presenting group should share a PowerPoint, with visual aids like diagrams or tables if necessary, to help facilitate in-class discussion. Case Memo: In less than 1.5 pages (using standard format), discuss what TopCoder’s innovative business model illustrates in terms of the new perspective of open innovation. What do you think are driving the emergence of this unconventional approach to software development? Do you expect this new approach to become the norm? (i.e., are we seeing a special case in TopCoder or is it the beginning of a new paradigm? Or perhaps there will be different niches with different models?) Your memo should incorporate relevant theories/concepts you learned to provide a well-structured, succinct but also comprehensive analysis of the questions.
