Description

Abstract This report is based on our field work to mapping metamorphic terrain in Tigray National Regional State particularly Negash area which is found at 840km from Addis Ababa in the northern part. Accordingly, the study is objected to identify the Lithologic units of the area and conduct mapping the metamorphic terrain in the study area. In light of this, we have used the general structural features of the terrain since it does not follow the contour lines as other Lithologic units (e.g. sedimentary and volcanic). In order to pursue this, we have conducted road geology with our instructors which paved the way for our field work. After this, we located the area on the topographic map and selected traverse lines along east-west directions which are perpendicular to the lithologies. Lastly, samples in different stations have been taken. While our field works, we used different geological equipments for the study. For instance, compass geological hammer, hand lens, rock sack, photo camera, topo map, and meter. The study has identified six lithological units. These are slate, phyllite, spotty phyllite, meta breccias, meta dolostone and granitic units. These units have varieties of structural features such as faults, minor folds, lineation, cracks, joints, foliations, veins, fracture, bedding, laying etc of various rock assemblages. We have found that the area has highly exposed metamorphic lithologies having different structures as well as rich of mineralization. The area is interesting site for scientist (geologists) and researchers the fact that it has excellent outcrops and exposures of the metamorphic-plutonic rocks. As a result of this, understanding of the metamorphic-plutonic units and its structural settings in the area is possible. And it has mineralization zones; hence this has tremendous economic advantage, scientific and extensive studies have to be done in the area to explore the existing minerals. 1 " P a g e...
