Book notes as we go

First chapters relatively normal, zoo dudly had a friend pierce which is different than the movie, no other major differences other then open celebration in the real world of Voldemort’s death

Philosopher = lover of wisdom, expert in or student of philosopher , an authority, Sorcerer- wizard of magician Philosophers stone (OED) – turn any metal into gold or silver, cure disease heal wounds and prolong life Sorcery- uses magic for enchantment, practice of the magic arts Wisdom- sound judgment, choice of means and ends

Does sorcerer do a better job at describing the environment? MAYBE, philosopher may actually be a more accurate/ better definition Who doesn’t care about means and only cares about ends? Voldemort Voldemort is a sorcerer Dumbledore is a philosopher Dumbledore is associated with Nicholas flamel

They did this because the word Philosopher would be hard to market to 8-12yr olds Stone Notes • • •

Heading into alchemy Newton had it as a fascination (crack science) 19th century

Chapter 1 Passage

He'd forgotten all about the people in cloaks until he passed a group of them next to the baker's. He eyed them angrily as he passed. He didn't know why, but they made him uneasy. This bunch were whispering excitedly, too, and he couldn't see a single collecting tin. It was on his way back past them, clutching a large doughnut in a bag, that he caught a few words of what they were saying. "The Potters, that's right, that's what I heard yes, their son, Harry" Mr. Dursley stopped dead. Fear flooded him. He looked back at the whisperers as if he wanted to say something to them, but thought better of it. Whos thoughts are this passage?? – DURSLEY Blaming others for his feelings, avoidance, no closure, no growth – easy step from here to prejudice Empathy vs sympathy- how would you feel in that situation vs how does that person feel Always fear what you don’t understand Cupboard under the stairs is a way to hide is problem Horcruix in harry could be negatively effecting petunia and others around him Protection in the house he has to go there at least once a year to be protected Rowling would find pictures of people cut them out and then label them with emotional characteristics

Rowling uses an assortment of words to get characters to almost “feel” real Vernon is threatening to kick wisdom out of a house Brought up mudblood- racism is universal Why is it important to talk about racism outside the contect of our culuture? Smug- self confidence you believe your better than someone- Malfoy isn’t better hes just rich Raised with ego She embarrassed Malfoy in front of his friends so he lashes out Thirst to prove oneself Asserting power and dominance – in social situations New theme introduced- sex The snake, bathroom, fang all of it

Dementor chapter – stay where you are – lupin Filch never found out how to work it…- maurders map- George said it Griffendore vs ravenclaw- firebolt- Jordan says it Professor treloni prediction- who says it? She does

In some trepidation, Harry opened the last parcel on his camp bed. It wasn't as bad as he had expected, however; his dress robes didn't have any lace on them at all - in fact, they were more or less the same as his school ones, except that they were bottle green instead of black. "I thought they'd bring out the color of your eyes, dear," said Mrs. Weasley fondly. "Well, they're okay!" said Ron angrily, looking at Harry's robes. "Why couldn't I have some like that?"

Why does rons mom prioritize harry over ron? Maybe she feels bad that harry comes from nothing or she generally doesn’t like her son or she figured that ron would be used to getting shitty hand me downs, maybe she doesn’t know that harry is loaded

It’s a setup for rons jealousy What ron misses is that harry wants a big complete family and ron is more concerned about material value Harry would give them his money but he knew they wouldn’t take it

There's something I haven't told you," Harry said. "On Saturday morning, I woke up with my scar hurting again. " Why is this important? Its foreshadowing the mental connection between harry and voldemeort

Class discussion on unforgivable curses Killing curse sounds like Kadaver and fall (which makes sense)

Lucious malfoys wand vs harrys original why could he block it?

Owners of brothers wands forced to fight each other may reverse spells ( why the ghosts came out) When is dumbledore aware of barty crouch Jr – when he removed harry from the stadium after Voldemort returns Chapter 1 group – The riddle house (on a hill over the village) House is a metaphor - its haunted because Voldemort trys to make himself something other than human Why was harry feeling franks mind / voldemorts when in the past close proximity was the trigger Chapter 3 – not really important Chapter 7- why does rowling offer such insight to quittage

Wants to discuss Harry’s name coming out of the goblet First 2 challenges Hints/cheating involved Rita skeeter Voldemorts return and defeat

Umbridge in order of the phoenix-

Tackle order of the phoenix

The dream changed. . . . His body felt smooth, powerful, and flexible. He was gliding be- tween shining metal bars, across dark, cold stone. . . . He was flat against the floor, sliding along on his belly. . . . It was dark, yet he could see objects around him shimmering in strange, vibrant colors. . . . He was turning his head. . . . At first glance, the corridor was empty . . . but no . . . a man was sitting on the floor ahead, his chin drooping onto his chest, his outline gleaming in the dark. . . . Harry put out his tongue. . . . He tasted the man’s scent on the air. . . . He was alive but drowsing . . . sitting in front of a door at the end of the corridor . . .

22 THE EYE OF THE SNAKE Harry longed to bite the man . . . but he must master the impulse. . . . He had more important work to do. . . . But the man was stirring . . . a silvery cloak fell from his legs as he jumped to his feet; and Harry saw his vibrant, blurred outline tower- ing above him, saw a wand withdrawn from a belt. . . . He had no choice. . . . He reared high from the floor and struck once, twice, three times, plunging his fangs deeply into the man’s flesh, feeling his ribs splinter beneath his jaws, feeling the warm gush of blood. . . . The man was yelling in pain . . . then he fell silent. . . . He slumped backward against the wall. . . . Blood was splattering onto the floor. . . . His forehead hurt terribly. . . . It was aching fit to burst. . . . “Harry! HARRY!”

We wanted to highlight this part of the story because we thought it was a significant event that showed off the abilities of the connection that Voldemort and harry share. Through the connection harry was able to (accidentally) connect to the part of voldemorts soul which rests inside the snake, which is how we was able to perceive and feel the attack on Mr weasly, along with the physical connection that occurred harry emotionally felt ramifications of this connection as he felt unnecessary hostility towards Dumbledore in his office just as himself, not the snake. Overall we thought that rowling was using this event to not only start the storyline towards the

9

eventual finale in the ministry of magic but to introduce occlumency training with snape, which would eventually lead to further development of his character

Pg 478

Don’t be stupid, you haven’t got fangs, he told himself, trying to keep calm, though the hand on his butterbeer bottle was shaking. You were lying in bed, you weren’t attacking anyone. . . . But then, what just happened in Dumbledore’s office? he asked him- self. I felt like I wanted to attack Dumbledore too. . . . We wanted to highlight this portion of the next chapter as well because it shows that while justifying that he doesn’t have fangs and he didn’t want to hurt mr weasly but he felt the impulse to attack Dumbledore In his office which shows that he is susceptible to negative impulses that Voldemort may send to his mind, which makes harry a potential weapon which is where oclumency comes in. This is highlighting how the mental connection between the two can be used, where Voldemort would want to use it as a weapon harry can use it to see into voldemorts plan

where’s Slytherin’s locket?” Marvolo’s ring had gone. “Sir, I wondered what you know about... about Horcruxes?” And it happened all over again: The dense fog filled the room so that Harry could not see Slughorn or Voldemort at all; only Dumbledore, smiling serenely beside him. Then Slughorn’s voice boomed out again, just as it had done before. “I don’t know anything about Horcruxes and I wouldn’t tell you if I did! Now get out of here at once and don’t let me catch you mentioning them again!”

We thought that this section was important to highlight for several reasons, to start the concept of a Horcrux was introduced which we had never seen before in this context. ( There had been previous interactions with one ( the diary) ) but it was unclear what this artifact actually was at the time. It also highlights 2 potential horcux’s as the chapter hinted at slytherins locket and marvolos ring being items of significant importance to tom. The chapter also essentially introduced the endgame concept to the story here where eventually the Horcrux’s will become the focus of the adventure and ultimately bring an end to Voldemort We also thought it was interesting that a clue like this that could be so crucial for defeating Voldemort yet Dumbledore really made no significant attempt ( that we know of) to pry the memory out of slughorn ( given how crucial it is you would think that slughorn would’ve just copped to his mistake and owned up to it and shared what he told tom) Also mention Dumbledore may have thought the similarity between harry and tom may have provided an opportunity for personal redemption Dumbledore explained that it might cause more damage than good to try and be aggressive, fearing the loss of slughorn as a professor, he bestowed the task upon harry with no real clear instruction on how to do it Having harry jump through hoops to get the real memory seemed a little strange from a sheer logic standpoint But in the end it ends up working so Dumbledore clearly knew his shit

We think that this is important to highlight for several reasons,
