2 Hospital Application: Leadership Theories Business leaders are different and unique from one another. Each one has their distinctive approaches and attributes to directing and helping their subordinates. More importantly, leaders must adapt to the varying scenarios, demands, and types of employees they must work with. Managers must be centered and calculated in how they lead, as this is important for their benefit and the organizations (Delk, 2019). In the hospital application Rachel and Tomas are two health care leaders who have the task to collaborate with their respective teams, however, each one uses different management styles to achieve the same outcome. The following paper will analyze the leadership theories in each management style, as well as point out the benefits and challenges of each manager’s characteristics, discuss which elements are present among situation, transactional, and transformational leadership theories, and detail how each style helps in overcoming demands in health care organizations today. Management Styles: Benefits and Challenges Rachel’s management approach can be best described as a transactional leadership style. Borkowski (2015) points out this leadership style is task-oriented and aims to maintain a good rapport among leaders and subordinates through achievements and awards. Also, she is bosscentered as she has taken control of the task at hand and notified how things will be executed without allowing input from her employees. One benefit of taking control of the assignment, is that no time is wasted on trying to organize the team. Her management of attention behavior is favorable as she got the attention of her employees and through her reward the employees will be able to succeed to levels they have not before. The downfall to her style is that not all employees are satisfied, as they feel there are favorites (Hospital Application, n.d.).

3 Tomas, on the other hand takes a different approach as he displays a transformational leadership style. He leads his team to collaborate together to achieve the organization’s goal. This style promotes a team-oriented appeal and work towards a unified goal (Walston, 2017). His style benefits the organization as he is encourages teamwork. Tomas took the time to inquire, among his team, to identify strengths, weaknesses, and skills (Hospital Application, n.d.). This approach benefits the health care organization as he shows that he values the skills of his employees as these are vital to improve the organization. A challenge with his approach could be that not all employees will be engaged or influenced to participate with no individual reward or way of advancing. Analyzing Elements of Situational, Transactional, and Transformational Theories In Rachel’s management style her task-oriented approach is an element in the Situational and Transactional Theory. Borkowski (2015) defines task-behavior as one where the leader is concise with the objectives, roles, and responsibilities. Her reward method is also an element of transactional leadership. As stated by Schwartz and Tumblin (2002) in (Borkowski, 2015), transactional leadership has been widespread in the health care sector. Rachel is allowing each employee an equal opportunity to achieve superior work for a lead position and, in essence, her individualized consideration is embracing the transformational theory. However, she is treating each employee different, as depicted through her interaction with the newest employee. Tomas displays attributes of the situational leadership model in his relationship behavior. He took the time to build a personal relationship with his employees by designating the meeting as a “strategy meeting”. Also, took the time to acquaint himself with his staff and displays a small amount of transactional element as he did not allow his employees to rebuttal when he informed there would be no incentives or rewards to achieve the organization’s goal. His

4 management style focuses on achieving the intended goal or vision and embraces the transformational approach. In this approach, his team and him are helping one another achieve a better relationship by effectively communicating and motivating (Walston, 2017). Leadership Styles and Assistance in Health Care Organizations Tomas and Rachel will each achieve the intended goal through their own approaches. These leadership styles will assist health care organizations achieve their goals. The situational leadership model will allow clinical leaders to designate duties, and relate with subordinates at a personal level, and allow employees to achieve independence by gaining experience and education. In the transactional approach, health care leaders will be able to reduce turnover rates by motivating employees to achieve objectives through rewards. Thus, improving the relationship between managers and subordinates. Lastly, transformational leadership is the newest and more common approach to managing and influencing innovative changes through an organization’s mission and vision (Borkowski, 2015).
