HCM 320 Milestone One

1. Public Health Issue Topic: Identify the public health issue you will use as a basis for your final project presentation. Briefly describe why you choose this topic. The public health issue I will use as a basis for my final project is Childhood Obesity. I chose this issue because I dealt with childhood obesity as a child and now as a mother it is something that I know I can help prevent in my children. Childhood obesity is one of the most pressing health threats facing the United States as one third of American children and adolescents are obese or overweight. Childhood obesity has grown out of control and has developed into a severe situation that needs America’s attention.

2. Economic Forces: Briefly describe some economic forces related to your public health issue. Macroeconomic Forces: Countless macroeconomics are in effect to help assist in this controversial subject. By making changes in the lunch kids receive at school, this can and should help in decreasing obesity in children. Enforcing restaurants and schools to modify the method in which they cook the foods, so children can select healthier choices in their meals to help in their control of the obesity situation. An idea they had was to give informational material like brochures and pamphlets to the residents of so they can absorb more information about childhood obesity and how to help aid with the control of it to prevent diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease in children. Schools are now educating children more on how to exercise and stay healthy.

Microeconomic Forces: The microeconomic forces that will change the actions of who and what needs to make the changes that involve improving food and drink choices for individuals. Everyone that sells food, and drinks are and will be affected. Low income families need to have access to quality food in their areas, as well as safe places for physical activity.

3. Key Regulation Policy: Determine economic policies or regulations that currently apply to your public health issue. U.S. Policymakers, Federal legislation and the Surgeon General has acknowledged the need and desire to make and develop regulations that address juvenile obesity and what the causes us and what needs to be done to rectify this situation. There are many regulations in place enacted in 2013 that have schools enforced to provide healthy and nutritious lunch options, physical activity present, and healthy snacks for afterschool programs. Some policies are along the same lines but also include less TV fast food advertisements directed at children.

4. Benefits and Consequences: Identify the perceived benefits and consequences resulting from the legislation supporting your public health issue.

The benefits are improving the health of our youth, reducing doctor visits for those with underlying conditions due to unhealthy weight, and increasing physical activity which improves overall health. Consequences are increased budgets in schools, more aid to those lower income families, and unhealthy children.

5. Impact of Regulation or Policy: Describe the economic impact resulting from the legislation supporting your public health issue. The economic impact would be the increased budget for schools and communities to improve the health of children who are obese.
