Case Study #1 - HDFS 1013 Notes...

Description

CASE STUDY #1 - Reese Reese was referred to advising by the registrar before the start of the summer semester because registration for summer courses is impossible because of a past due balance. Reese has a 1.94 cumulative grade point average (GPA), and failed all courses in the previous fall semester. Reese shares with the advisor that Reese has been living out of a car since February. After Reese’s father passed away during the fall semester, Reese stopped attending classes. Reese has no other family in the area, and could not reach extended family members out-of-state for help or support when Reese got behind on bills. When Reese returned to classes for the spring semester, Reese was already so far behind on bills that a short-term loan was needed to get enough money to pay tuition. Reese doesn’t make enough money with the two jobs Reese is already working, and missed several months of rent. Now that Reese has been evicted from the apartment, Reese has been couch-surfing and intermittently sleeping in the car. Reese’s friends have left campus for the summer, and Reese doesn’t have any place to stay. Reese is committed to finishing school in order to find a higher paying job. Reese wants to retake classes in the summer to boost the GPA and regain eligibility for financial aid and scholarships. Reese is overwhelmed.

DETERMINE the specific needs of that student.

Reese needs financial help, counseling (grief and feeling of being overwhelmed), food. IDENTIFY a minimum of four (4) resources you, the Dean of Students, would recommend for that student. The resources are listed and described in the website of the Division of Student Affairs (DSA). To find the resources, access the website (https://studentaffairs.unt.edu) and scroll down to see the lists, which are arranged into four groups, each preceded by a banner: Wellbeing & Safety; Career & Leadership; Student Life; Engagement and Support [DO NOT click on the “Programs & Services” link]. Additional on-campus services not listed in this website, but that you can also refer students to, include the UNT Library (https://library.unt.edu) and the Office of Financial Aid (https://financialaid.unt.edu).

1. The Office of Financial Aid Why – Complete the Financial Aid form by October 1st in order to be considered for scholarships and loans. How – This will help Reese earn free money and money that he can pay back later. 2. Engagement and Support – Money Management Services Why – This financial wellness program is designed for students to receive advice, resources, and solutions for their current and possibly future money issues. Coaching teams work with the student privately to seek financial solutions. Appointments can be scheduled online or in person. How – The teams in the Financial Wellness Program will aid Reese in finding a solution to his living situation and past balance to the University of North Texas, such as helping him devise a plan to pay rent for an apartment and begin to pay the past due balance. 3. Well Being and Safety – Individual Counseling Why – UNT provides counseling for their students experiencing anxiety, stress, trauma, and much more. Appointments can be scheduled online or in person. How – Reese would benefit greatly from utilizing the counseling services provided at UNT, because of the loss of his father and the separation from his family.

4. Well Being and Safety – Food Pantry Why – Students who wish to visit the pantry will meet with a staff member and discuss their situation. Additionally, the Dean of Students have installed protocols that allow for student confidentiality. How – The food pantry will provide free food for Reese.

You must choose the four services/resources from at least TWO DIFFERENT GROUPS on the DSA website. Yes, you may choose one resource from each group, but you may not choose all four from the same group.

COMPOSE a step-by-step plan for the student. In this plan, you must explainwhy each resource you chose is a good choice for that student and describe exactly how this will help the student get back on track. Write a minimum of three sentences for each resource you chose.

RANK-ORDER the listof resources for the student. In other words, explain which resources you think the student should seek out first, then second, then third, and so on. Explain in detail your reasoning for why the student should access those resources in that particular order.

FIND TWO ADDITIONAL resources that piqued your curiosity as you read through this website. Describe how you or a friend of yours could benefit by using those services. Be as thorough and descriptive as possible – do NOT simply list the names of the resources. Note: A portion of your grade will be based on the quality of your writing. Make sure that you proofread your work for issues (e.g., poor grammar, incomplete sentences). You may also seek out one-on-one help from the Writing Center: https://writingcenter.unt.edu/
