COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is intended to provide students with a basic knowledge of the different elements of the social work profession including concepts, practice, and the various roles a social worker plays in the field. A comparison of practice in a variety of social work settings with target populations is provided. This course is taught 100% online in synchronous format. Synchronous format means that there will be weekly real-time class meetings in which you must be present. These meetings will be conducted using the “Microsoft Teams Application.” You need Internet access and a supported web browser like Chrome, Firefox or Safari in order to complete this class and the required assignments. The textbook is a part of the online materials. This is a 3-credit course which assumes 3 hours of instruction and additional study time. We will meet every Tuesday from 4:30 to 5:50 PM using the Microsoft Teams Application. Class participation means you are present and participate in real time chat during the Monday sessions. The class week begins on Monday and ends Sunday night. The HFC Moodle system contains MindTap readings and exercises for each week should be completed by Sunday night before the next Monday class. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Students will be able to define and describe social work as a profession and to distinguish it from other professions. 1. Students will be able to identify and describe the history of the Social Welfare System practices and to analyze the historical factors affecting current social work trends. 2. Student will be able to articulate and articulate the role of the generalist BSW, and the various settings in which social work is practiced. 3. Students will be able to define poverty and its causes and the roles that social workers play in assisting the under-served population. 4. Students will be able to examine their own interests and attitudes about social work. 5. Students will be able to define barriers to human rights and social justice issues and the role of social work in the fighting for social and institutional injustice. 6. Students will be able to compare and contrast the different professional social worker

roles. 7. Students will be able to define the role of social workers in mental health settings. REQUIRED TEXT An introduction to the Profession of Social Work (Sixth edition).
