Description

Deepak Balraj Instructor Hammond History 350, Section 104 April 20, 2017 Essay 2 Marimba Ani, Let The Circle Be Unbroken, Tumalize Duara: Three Hundred And Sixty Degrees.

The author in the final chapter of her book explains the spirituality of the African people and how it has influenced the African culture (“We are a spiritual people because we are an African people”). She explains how the spiritual nature of the African people has enabled them to make it this far through all the suffering and anguish they faced. She explains the need for the African people to unite and awaken their hidden spiritually and pleads to turn it into a political weapon. She urges the African people to disperse myths and to stop believing in the western world views. This chapter and this book in its entirety has taught me the importance of one’s spirituality and staying true to one’s self and his or her cultural background. Oppression comes in many forms, we must not believe everything the world feed us. Every person must think for themselves and establish their own history. The western world view has dominated the world and is seen as the truth, nothing can be further from the truth. They have tried to erase the existence and the importance of people from other backgrounds. We should no longer remain oppressed, we must free our minds from the mental oppression that still takes places in today’s world. I used to believe oppression and slavery had ended, but it still exists today, but through different sources and forms. The people should realize this threat and not be satisfied with partial freedom and should strive for complete freedom. Just because a person lives in a different country does not require his or her to forget their heritage and their culture. Everyone must stay true to their culture and heritage, everyone must be proud of who they are, no matter where they go and should never let anyone tell them otherwise. I have learnt that we as a people must learn to use our historical and spiritual backgrounds as political weapons and strive to better our communities....
