An essay about the contribution of Tan Hooi Ling as COO of Grab....

Description

History Contribution Leadership has been described as the process through which a person encourages and motivates others to participate in the performance of a certain objective. Since the dawn of time, masses have been guided by competent leaders. Even though times have changed, the contributions of these outstanding leaders must not be forgotten, and even if methods and ways of doing things have shifted, the ways of these good leaders must not be disregarded [ CITATION Pat16 \l 17417 ]. Tan Hooi Ling returned to Grab full-time in 2015, taking on the role of Chief Operator Officer (COO), with responsibilities for product development, customer experience, and human resources. In actual fact, she is known as "the plumber" due to her rational operational emphasis on solving problems, breaking obstacles, and restructuring the company model in capability to implement on their customer goal. She was also in charge of building multiple relationships that were necessary for progress like in 2018, Grab collaborated with Japan’s Credit Saison that provides loan services and worked with Mastercard which provide prepaid services. According to her, the partners trusted the team because of their desire to improve people's lives [ CITATION Gen20 \l 17417 ] Grab known as the Uber of Southeast Asia, competing with GoJek to be the main supplier of ride-hailing services. The company developed quickly to become a $10 billion platform-based corporation with over 100 million users, operating in over 225 locations across Asia. In 2018, Grab paid $6 billion for Uber's regional division, which included UberEats, which launched the drive into food delivery, and many other industries. Therefore, as Tan’s expectation, thousands of Grab's green-jacketed motorbikes, and vehicles are now on standby to transport anything, anywhere, quicker than anybody else in Southeast Asia [ CITATION Gen20 \l 17417 ]. Tan also has been supervising essential pillars of the company's operations including business growth, increasing market share in eight Southeast Asian nations and more than 500 cities along with analytics, customer satisfaction, and operations activities. She has also doubled down on Grab's sectors, and she is especially dedicated about closing the financial inclusion gap in Southeast Asia by creating Grab Financial Group [ CITATION Kat21 \l 17417 ]. According to Tan, the financial inclusion gap in Southeast Asia is one of the most pressing issues she wants to address [ CITATION Mic21 \l 17417 ]. An approximated 70% of the population is unbanked and hence unknown to traditional financial institutions. Because they do not have access to credit or other financial services, they become stuck in an endless loop that makes it very difficult for them to escape poverty. She recalls meeting driver-partners one at a time in the early days of Grab to assist

them installed their first bank accounts and since 2012 the company has assisted 1.7 million micro-entrepreneurs in opening their first bank accounts. She wanted to assist them in stepping away from this terrible cycle. Since then, she decided to establish the Grab Financial Group by providing her clients and partners with financial services such as payments, insurance, financing, and wealth management [ CITATION Mic21 \l 17417 ]. Tan Hooi Ling also defines start-up success as the point at which the business no longer relies on its co-founders. Moreover, she is a continuous inventor, merging concepts from other areas, generally through collaborators, such as an e-wallet, a peer-to-peer payment system, and insurance. Tan claims that the company has not once lost track of profitability along the way. She believes that payments are the energy that runs her "super app," allowing it to become the most efficient, integrated, and trustworthy source of all [ CITATION Gen20 \l 17417 ]. As a result, with a valuation of $14 billion in 2019, Grab is currently considered the region's most valuable startup [ CITATION Mic21 \l 17417 ]. .
