Singer, Songwriter, Aboriginal Elder & Yorta Yorta Man

Acknowledgement of Country I would like to acknowledge that we gather here today upon lands traditionally owned by the Turrbal people and extend my respect towards Elders past, present, and future as they hold the memories, traditions, culture and hope for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the nation.

Born on the 8th of January 1956 Taken from his biological parents Bounced between multiple foster homes Settled with the Cox family (The Adelaide Review) Foster sister taught him guitar and keyboard

Received letter from biological sister. Learnt about his passed. Had an identity crisis lasting over 10 years. Met his soon to be wife Ruby.

Aspiring Adult and Mucistion ● Attracted Paul Kelly with ‘Took the children away’. ● Songs resonated with Indigenous people across Australia. ● First album ‘Charcoal lane’ won numerous awards. ● Continued to create music that highlighted cultural issues experienced by Indegenous Australians. Toured the world with Rose Visiting US, Europe and remote Australia. Took over wife’s foundation. Continues to provide support to the Indigenous Community.

Assimilation Era ● Began in the 1950s and ended in the 1960s ● Based on the premise that every Australian, were to live the life of a white Australian. ● The removal of children continued through this era. (A.O. Neville) (Philips et al., 2018) (Hamptons et al., 2013)

Integration, Self-Determination & Self-Management Eras ● Integration era began in 1960s and continued into the 1980s. ● Grouped with this era, came self-determination and selfmanagement in the 1970s. ● Australia as a country began to acknowledge multiculturalism. ● Indigenous Australians became more politically active. Reconciliation Era ● Began in the 1990s is reconciliation. ● The Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation was founded in 1992 with an aim to commence a 10-year process of reconciliation. ● This process is still on-going and will continue for many years. (Moses, 2011) (Hampton et al., 2013)
