Marissa Johnson Case Study 2

The Hot Tub Mystery: The Story of a Very HOT Tub Part I 1. The paramedics observed wine bottles around the hot tub and that the water was very hot. They also noticed that the Underhill’s were dead for some time. 2. With the tub being so hot and the bodies having been dead for a while, the paramedics were concerned of foul play. They should have asked the maid if she saw anything or anyone, why the hot tub may have been so hot, and if the couple were on any medications. 3. The Lasik that Mr. Underhill was taking would have contributed to his death and possibly the wine for Mrs. Underhill. Both the Lasik’s and the alcohol act as diuretics which lowers blood pressure, causing vasodilation. The very hot tub would also cause vasodilation. 4. The vasodilation could very likely cause the couple to faint in the tub. Lasik’s and alcohol both have some side effects like dehydration, and it is probably not a good idea to get in a hot tub that is very hot after using them. Additionally, alcohol can impair walking, seeing, and talking, which could contribute to their death because of impaired judgement. 5. The Underhill’s probably first fainted due to the vasodilation from the Lasik’s in Mr. Underhill and the alcohol and hot water for both of them. Then the prolonged time in the hot tub caused a heat stroke and drowning, leading to their death. Part II 1. I think that the couple died before going under water. I believe that after entering the hot tub they both suffered heat stroke due to the temperature of the water. This then caused the bodies to go under the water. 2. Lasik’s is a diuretic used treat congestive heart failure and helps to lower blood pressure. 3. Blood alcohol level is the amount of alcohol in the blood at that given time. 4. Alcohol acts as a diuretic and leads to dehydration and impaired judgement. It can affect walking, speech, and vision. 5. Alcohol is metabolized at 0.016% an hour. 6. A .20% BAL on a 160lb man would not have as much of an affect as on a 120lb woman. In either case, alcohol will lower blood pressure and impair judgement but for the man, paired with Lasik’s, would cause a huge drop in blood pressure, plus the extremely hot tub, makes for a bad combination.

Part III 1. The body regulated blood pressure by changing cardiac output or changing the vessel diameter. Cardiac output is changed by the heart increasing or decreasing heart rate and/or stroke volume. 2. The Lasik, hot water, and alcohol all caused vasodilation in the couple. 3. The body could have constricted the blood vessels or slowed the heart rate. 4. Someone could have pulled them out of the water, cooled them down, try to wake them, and get them water upon waking....
