Class: Com. 2100

Date: June 26, 2018

Instructor Name: MJ

Topic:

How to Make an Origami Balloon

General Purpose:

To demonstrate the process of how to make an origami balloon.

Specific Purpose:

To demonstrate to my classmates the process of how to make a blow-up paper balloon using the style of origami.

Central Idea:

Learning a new skill can be frustrating or stressful, but with this easy craft, I can show you how fun it is instead.

INTRODUCTION Attention-getter:

The record for most paper cranes folded in an hour is 19,688 by a team of over 2,000 people in Singapore in 2009.

Relevance to Audience:

If anyone likes to learn new skills or likes to make creations using your hands, this will be fun for you. This is great for decoration, or a fun craft to enjoy with children.

Credibility Statement:

Good afternoon everyone, I’m Vivian and I learned how to make this paper origami balloon in elementary school, and I have been making them ever since. Being a nanny, I like to teach kids how to make them, too.

Preview of speech:

Today, I will explain what you will need to make these paper origami balloons, and the cost of making them.

(First, we will discuss the materials and how much each one is going to cost you.) I. In order to make an origami balloon, you will need the following materials: A. Any colored paper of your choice B. Scissors (if the paper isn’t already in a square shape) C. Crayons or markers (optional) (Now that we know what we will need, we can discuss how much things cost.) II. The total cost for this final product will be around $5, with the following materials and prices: A. A pack of paper from Walmart is going to cost approximately $3. B. 1 pair of scissors from Walmart is going to cost approximately $1. C. A pack of markers from Walmart is going to cost approximately $1. (Add all that up and you will be paying less than $5 dollars to make origami balloons. Now I can discuss how to make them!) III. Finally, you will be able to make these balloons in less than 10 minutes. A. First, take a square piece of paper, meet two opposite corners together, and fold to make a triangle shape. B. Unfold, then take the other two corners and repeat to make another triangle shape. C. Unfold, push in two straight sides together (not the corners) until they touch, and fold down. This will make another triangle. D. Hold it like a pyramid and fold the two bottom corners up towards the tip.

E. Flip over and repeat for the other side. You will now have a diamond shape. F. Fold the two side corners in to meet at the center. G. Flip over and repeat for the other side. You will now have a 6-sided hexagon shape. H. Starting from the tip, fold the top corners down to make flaps and insert into the pockets you created in the last step. I. Flip over and repeat for the other side. J. There will always be one open and one closed side of the origami at this point. Locate the open end and blow air inside. You have just created your balloon! (One thing that you can do to make this decorative is to draw your own designs on the outside.) CONCLUSION Summary statement:

Today, I have discussed how to make origami balloons, the materials you will need and the total cost of the materials. I know it can be tricky to learn, but once you get the hang of it, you will remember it for life.

Audience response statement:

Now, whenever you are looking for something to do in your free time or want to teach someone something cool, you will be able to create these origami balloons.

WOW statement:

The next time you’re bored, spice up your life with some Japanese culture!...
