Unit of Study Information

This unit of study considers the important bio-psycho-social and functional changes that occur across the lifespan from gestation to old age. Understanding bio-psycho-social factors of healthy human development is important for addressing our major national health priority areas. Such areas discussed are adolescent risk-taking behaviour, mental health, stress, socio-economic factors of health, life-stage health concerns across genders, cancer, and other chronic diseases across the lifespan. Prerequisites and assumed knowledge

There are no prerequisites or assumed knowledge for this unit of study. 2.2

Attendance Requirements

This unit requires attendance at a weekly lecture of two-hours duration, as well as occasional participation in online activities (e.g. Assessment 1 Quiz). To succeed in this unit of study it is best to attend and participate in lectures as much as possible.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. Analyse the interplay between age, bio-psycho-social factors, environment and culture on health. 2. Engage in critical discussion about health concerns of individuals across the lifespan. 3. Engage in evidence-based evaluations of current health research, initiatives and controversies. 4. Critically evaluate the robustness of research carried out on health conditions across the lifespan. 5. Synthesise research into a critical argument. 6. Be an active participant/observer in research that is applied to lifespan health .

4.2 Learning Management System (LMS) A new Learning Management System (LMS) being tested by The University of Sydney, called CANVAS, supports teaching in this unit. Material presented in lectures will be posted before the lecture on the CANVAS LMS site, as will announcements and updates. You should go to the site at least twice a week. At times, you will need to access online learning activities and resources that complement the seminar program through the CANVAS LMS site.
