Huichol Music Huichol Popular Music Groups!

- Música mestiza in the Wixárika communities ! • at least since 1930’s! - HUichol music groups since 1970’s! • violin, vihuela, tololoche! • Mestizo dress first, later as Wix.! - Recording professionally (cassettes, CDs, digital)! • began in 1990s! • “modern groups” made it to Grammys in 2008! - Los Teopa! • one of the first “famous” Huichol groups (1980s-90s)! - they learned partly from recordings ! - El Venado Azul (José López)! • first group to record and find national fame! • Norteño influence ! “Modern” Huichol Groups !

- Wixárika musicians say “modern” to mean . . .! • More harmonic variation (i.e. more chord changes)! • Other song forms (not just strophic corridos, etc.)! - especially romanticas, narcocorridos, and cumbias! • Expanded instrumentation ! • Often younger, more professional, and urban-oriented ! - Huichol Musical (Nuevo Amanecer Huichol) !
