Description

Alexander Sardinas One interesting concept I learned from today was the concept of the five stages of grief. I have always heard about the stages but have never really been taught what they actually mean. What I found more interesting is the inclusion of how to overcome these stages. For example, one of the first stages is grief. In order to overcome this stage one must accept the reality of the situation. I have been watching the Sopranos, which is a fantastic show. In order to not spoil it if you haven't seen it I will speak in generalities. One of the character’s significant others reveals some information that changes the course of her life forever. The character then has a momentous decision to make in which he chooses to kill the significant other. This decision was not done lightly but it causes the character to go into hiding. So far he has not accepted the reality. Which is going to be needed in order to move past this. Another concept that was interesting in today’s class was the inclusion of all the different types of models. The disclaimer from George Box rings true, “Essentially, all models are wrong, but some are useful.” These models are helpful to understanding people’s decisions which are almost always irrational. These models are a great tool to try and grasp the inner workings of the society we live in. One example from class that stuck out was the culture and tradition model. A study done on vietnam veteran heroin users found that once they came back to the states a majority of them stop using. One possible reason that was found was that in the US it is not widely accepted here. So in order to blend in they simply stopped. Will there ever be a point where psychotherapy could predict/explain everyone’s decision? This question stems from the idea that models are incorrect but helpful. If there is no limit to human intelligence we could reach a point where we could understand other individual’s thoughts....
