Chapter 31 & 32 Immunologic System Intro & Disorders Immune system protects the body from disease causing microorganisms. Innate: Immediately to all antigens defense mechanism, operational all the time. Skin and mucous membrane first line of defense. Sweat glands secrete lysozyme an antimicrobial enzyme. IgA & phagocytes secreted from respiratory and GI tract. Inflammatory response, skin, stomach acid, mucus, phagocytic cells Inflammation is dilation of the capillary beds and increasing the capillary permeability of affected area. Rubor [redness] Tumor [Swelling] Calor [heat] Dolor [pain] Adaptive (Acquired): production of antibodies in response to specific antigen through the action of B & T lymphocytes (cells) Humoral immunity & cellular immunity  Active Natural- body produces antibodies in response to exposure to a live pathogen  Active Artificial- body produces antibodies in response to a vaccine  Passive Natural- mom passes antibodies to her baby through breast milk or placenta  Passive Artificial- immunoglobulins are administered to an individual (not produced by the body therefore no memory cells for antigen)

Platelets: 150,000-400,00, low levels cause hemorrhage leukemia, splenomegaly, high levels caused by polycythemia, inflammatory disease, infection, cancer.

White Blood Cells Neutrophils- 2,500-8000- Increased with acute bacterial infection - Neutorpenia 10,000 (inflammation, infection, trauma, dehydration, stress, steroid use, and thyroid storm) Leukopenia- WBC...
