1. Sit up and lean slightly forward. 2. Hold incentive spirometer upright & breathe out normally. 3. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, & close lips tightly around it. 4. Begin to inhale slowly and deeply while watching the “coach indicator”. 5. As the piston rises, be sure to keep the smiley face or yellow indictor between the two arrows for 3-5 seconds. 6. Move the marker tab to the level you reached. 7. Take out the mouthpiece and breathe slowly, at your own pace! 8. Repeat these steps 10 times an hour while awake. 9. After at least 10 deep breaths, it is important to cough so that you may rid of excess mucus in the lungs. 10. If you are experiencing pain, brace your open incision with a pillow or blanket to provide more comfort and support while you cough. 11. Keep the incentive spirometer within reach while in the hospital and at home, so that you will remember to use it! The Incentive spirometer is used to prevent or treat atelectasis. Atelectasis is a lung condition characterized by collapsed alveoli. Deep inspiration is necessary to open the pores of the alveoli effectively and promote deep breathing.
