Description of Skill a device that wil expand a patients lungs by helping them to breathe more deeply and fully.

Indications -presence of pulmonary atelectasis -presence of condititons predisposing to atelectasisi -upper abdominal surgery -thoracic surgery -COPD patients -presnece of a restrictive lung defect associated with quadraplegia and/or dysfunctional diaphragm

Outcomes/Evaluation -teaches the patient how to take slow, deep breaths and maximize their lung capacity

Potential Complications -hyperventilation and respiratory alkalosis -discomfort -pulmonary barotrauma -hypoxemia -exacerbation of bronchospasm -fatigue

CONSIDERATIONS

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) -instruct the patient to exhale, letting the whole breath out -ask the patient to close their lips around the mouthpiece -instruct thepatient to inhale slowly, breathing in until unable to do amny more -hold breath for 2-3 seconds and then exhale slowly
