Description

In-Class Exercise #1 1) a) Each of the molecules below is overall neutral in charge (i.e., non-ionic). One of the structures has non-zero formal charges. Place the non-zero formal charges on this structure.

b) One of the structures in part 1a is a not a valid Lewis structure. Circle the invalid structure.

c) Concisely explain why the compound you circled above is invalid.

2) a) The following is a list of a few of the more than 600 chemicals in, or produced by, cigarettes. Provide Lewis structures including all non-zero formal charges (where appropriate) for each. You DO NOT need to draw these structures with accurate geometry. i) 1,3-butadiene (C4H6) ii) Methyl Ammonium Chloride (CH3NH3+Cl-) iii) Methyl isocyanate (CH3NCO) iv) Malonaldehyde (CH2(CHO)2)

b) Precisely draw the Lewis structure, including the proper geometry, of Acrolein (CH2CHCHO).

3) Draw two valid Lewis structures for potassium thiocyanate (KSCN).

4) a) Provide the resonance structures that results from the indicated curved arrow electron pushing.

b) Draw the curved arrow on the left hand resonance structures that will result in the right hand resonance structures.

5) Draw all reasonable resonance structures for the following compounds. Where necessary fill in the missing lone pair electrons assuming valid Lewis structures for each before drawing any resonance structures. Label major/minor where appropriate....
