Description

INERTIA Inertia , property of matter that makes it resist any change in its movement. This property is accurately described in Newton's law of motion. An object at rest tends to remain in this condition; and a moving object tends to proceed in a straight line. The inertia of an object when faced with a translation is determined by its mass. In the face of a rotation, the object's inertia is determined by its moment of inertia. Moment of inertia , resistance opposed by a rotating body to a change in its rotational speed. Sometimes it is called rotational inertia. The moment of inertia plays an equivalent role in rotation to that of mass in linear motion. For example, if a catapult launches a small and a large stone, applying the same force to each, the small stone will have a much greater acceleration than the large one. Similarly, if the same pair of forces ( see Moment of Force) is applied to a wheel with a small moment of inertia and another one with a large moment of inertia, the turning speed of the first wheel will increase much faster than the second one. An object's moment of inertia depends on its mass and the distance of the mass from its axis of rotation. For example, a 1 kg flywheel with most of its mass close to the axis will have a smaller moment of inertia than another 1 kg flywheel with most of the mass close to the edge. The moment of inertia of a body is not a single, fixed quantity. If an object is rotated around different axes, it will also have different moments of inertia, since its mass distribution in relation to the new axis is usually different from what it was in the previous one. The laws of motion of rotating objects are equivalent to the laws of motion of linearly moving objects (moment of inertia replaces mass, angular velocity replaces linear velocity). Rotation , movement that forces all points of a rigid solid to describe arcs of equal amplitude, belonging to circles (Circle and circumference) whose centers are on the same straight line or axis of rotation, which can occupy any position in space. To study the dynamics of rotating bodies, the concept of rigid solid or body formed by a set of material points whose mutual distances remain unchanged was introduced. A rigid solid is animated by a rotation movement when it moves connected to two fixed points, which can be interior or exterior to it. The line that joins these fixed points is the axis of rotation, and the points of a solid in its movement describe circles in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation and whose centers lie on said axis.

Moment of force , in physics, a measure of the effect of rotation caused by a force. It is equal to the magnitude of the force multiplied by the distance from the axis of rotation, measured perpendicular to the direction of force. Instead of describing rotational dynamics as a function of the moment of forces, it can be done on the basis of force pairs. A pair of forces is a set of two equal and opposite forces applied at different points....
