Description

Kym Forthun Children’s Literature 9/8/18 Inside Out & Back Again Journal Inside out and back again is different from the other novels I read, mainly because it is a lot of poems. This book is also different than the poem books I’ve read in the past, the poems in this book tell a story they are like a journal for the little girl telling the story. My opinion about the main character is that she is one of those girls that wants to do anything her brothers do but is told she can’t. Her brothers are kind of jerks, they are bullies to her, and I know older brothers are “supposed to be like that” but she just wants to be like them and they make her so mad when they tell her she can’t. I like how the book even though it is poems, it is actually a story and it allows the reader to picture what is going on. I think the decision that Kim Ha’s family made was the right decision, if they wouldn’t have left, they would have been forced to surrender to the North when they took over Saigon. I love how this story is very descriptive it makes it that much easier for the readers to imagine what is going on and picture the people and the environment that Kim Ha’s family is in. The amount of time the Kim Ha and her brothers spend in school is different from the beginning of the book. At the beginning of the book Kim Ha only had classes in the afternoon and on Saturdays now they go to school early in the morning and are there for a normal school day. At the beginning of the story, we didn’t know anything about Kim Ha’s family's faith. Towards the end of the story, we read that the family is baptized at the church, that is a big change from the beginning to the end of the story. This story really did a good job of hitting me in the feels, I think I cried like 3 times while reading it because it was so descriptive and sad that they don’t really have a “home” anymore, like they have somewhere to live in alabama but they don’t have a home anymore. The family can’t say oh my home is Saigon because Saigon isn’t a place anymore, and I just think that is so sad and heartbreaking for a family to not really have a place to call home anymore. I also liked how when Kim Ha was learning English she said the person who invented English must have liked snakes because of all the s’s we add to the end of our words and then how later on where she was learning and it got more confusing she said the person who invented English should be bitten by a snake it really

stuck out to me and I thought it was amusing. Another thing that stuck out to me was when she said “Would be simpler if English and life were logical.”...
