INTEGRATIVE FINAL LEARNING PROJECT

The knowledge and learning exposure I have received so far on the course has been of extreme value to me and the course texts and course-mates I have had the humble opportunity to be on this journey with has been an overwhelming blessing.

The first text ‘Asking the right questions’ — a guide to critical thinking we covered three main concepts namely — thinking styles, ambiguity and evidence.

We identified three dimensions to critical thinking as awareness, desire and availability. This helped us understand the hurdle behind the critical thinking process. There was also the Sponge approach and the panning for gold approach. The former emphasizing knowledge acquisition and the latter stressing on the active interaction with the source of knowledge.

We identified two thinking styles – the weak sense and the strong sense. While the weak sense approach shields your current convictions, the strong sense assesses all claims and convictions particularly your own.

We defined ambiguity as working to understand the true intent of information, and we identified three areas of ambiguity as: (1) Checking for Eligibility (II) Determining Eligibility (III) Context to Ambiguity. We discussed evidence as developing the habit of asking questions about evidence or beliefs. We identified sources of evidence as (I) Personal Experiences (II) Observations & Surveys (III) Case Examples (IV) Testimonials (V) Expert Opinion (VI) Research studies (VII) Analogies.

In our second text, Common sense economics, we covered three major concepts namely – (I) Personal Finance (II) Invisible Hand Theory (III) The Role of government. The Personal finance concept emphasized on some subsets and the need to start saving now and increase the likelihood of success, set goals, use different tools to help you succeed with your budget and develop a plan to achieve set goals.

It discussed the need to invest and avoid credit card debt. It identified and explained ten Key elements of economic thinking, the role of government and how politics adversely affects economicgrowth and development.

The third text ‘You are not so smart’ covers cognitive biases, heuristics & logical fallacies. Bias is described as a viewpoint in favor of or against a topic, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. Cognitive biases discuss predictable patterns of behavior that mislead us into drawing incorrect conclusions.

The second theory heuristics explains how we use mental shortcuts to solve common problems rather than consciously addressing and thinking them through.

The third theory Logical fallacies are like mathematics problems involving language, in which instance you omit a step or you get flipped around without initially realizing it. They can also be the outcome of wishful thinking.

The fourth text ‘Who moved my Cheese’ provides an analogy to change in our work and personal lives. It’s about 4 characters searching for Cheese in a Maze. Cheese represents what we want in life (e.g. a successful career, money, health, freedom, spiritual growth), the maze represents our complex world, and the 4 characters represent the 4 types of people we encounter in any change situation.

It’s setup in a maze, where there are 2 mice called Sniff and Scurry and also 2 other little people called Hem and Haw who go out to look for Cheese every day. One this particular day they find that their regular stash of cheese is depleted. The mice and the little people both respond very differently. The mice Sniff and Scurry are less dramatic and frantic in their reaction and show a better tendency to adapt to change, while the little people Hem and Haw don’t adapt too well and are over dramatic in their reaction to the new development.

The book traces and outlines their respective journeys, and most importantly how Haw embraced his transition and found new cheese adapting well to change.

I have a lot of confidence in the quality and depth of knowledge I have received so far in this program from the Professors and my fellow classmates. I believe it is preparing me for greater things going forward....
