Why did you select your career?

Ever since I was young, I always admired those who put their lives on the line to protect our communities. But my interest in policing really grew after I had an interaction with a female officer named Amanda when I was 10 years old. My father had gotten into some trouble with the law that ended in him being at the hospital. So, my mom brought my brother, sister and I to the hospital but didn’t want us to see him so we sat in another room with the officer that had brought him to the hospital. She was very reassuring, telling us our dad was going to be okay and offering us popsicles. Although her gesture wasn’t big, it had a huge impact on me because that day in particular was one of the hardest days of my life and I found comfort in the officer’s words. I also now recognize that what she did when she arrested my dad essentially saved his life, which is something I couldn’t comprehend as a 10-year-old. Since that day, I’ve been working towards my goal of becoming a police officer so that I can impact people and communities in a positive way by enforcing laws to protect them, as Amanda did when I was experiencing my worst day.

What is your greatest strength? And weakness?

Personally, I think my greatest strength is my goal-oriented mindset and determination. When I set myself a goal, I do everything I possibly can to achieve that goal, and I tell everyone I can about it so that I can be held accountable, and it works not because I have a fear of failing but because I’m extremely determined to reach any goal I set for myself. For instance, when I decided I wanted to seriously look into a career in law enforcement, I started going to the gym to build muscle for the first time in my life. At first it was hard but I kept pushing myself knowing that a career in law enforcement requires a strong, physically fit person, and I’ve been going consistently for over two years now and it’s become a big part of my life. Whether the goal is career related or personal, I do whatever it takes to reach it. As for my biggest weakness, I have a problem where I assume people are being honest and genuine until they prove otherwise. This isn’t always a bad thing but I do realize how this could be a problem in policing. So, I’ve recognized it as being something I need to work on in order to reach my goals so instead of automatically believing something someone tells me I try to stop myself and think everything through logically and reasonably to decide whether or not I should trust this person, instead of believing them right off the bat....
