Mies-En-Scene short essay...

Description

Byron Choate Mise-en-Scene Essay The mise-en-scene of Singin’ in the Rain revealed characters, shaped the audience feelings and attention. As soon as the film begins the audience are introduced to two famous movie stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont. They are well known because the crowd turns ecstatic when the stars arrive to the red carpet. When they get out of the car the audience gets to see what they are wearing and their clothes well represent their social status because no one else there looks like them. The stars wearing sparkly, expensive, and flashy clothes. The film is trying to get the audience to realize these are the stars in the diegesis and they are going to be the stars of the film as well. As the audience understands this they pay more attention to Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont. The mise-en-scene is shaping the audience attention onto the main characters of the film and at the same time they are being revealed to the audience. Another way character was revealed was Kathy. Don was escaping all of the chaotic fans which lead him to jump off a bus into Kathy’s car. When he jumps in the audience is introduced to a startled and rude towards Don because he is a famous actor and Kathy thinks he’s conceited about getting any girl he wants. This is the first time in the film the audience sees someone reject Don. This sets up the perfect love story of a famous actor falling for a girl who doesn’t want him. This is only because of the mise-en-scene revealing the personality of the two characters. The mise-en-scene shapes the audience feelings throughout the film by creating a love story between Don Lockwood and Kathy Selden. Don and Kathy walk to a set and Kathy climbs on a ladder while she asks if he can sing. When Don turns the lights and fan on in this scene he is acting in the diegesis but the audience can understand that he has feelings for Kathy because of this romantic scene in the film. The scene is very significant because the lighting, background and fog enhance the love story which appeals to the audience feelings. The mise-en-scene sucks the audience into falling for Don and Kathy, wanting them to be together. The film wants the audience to love Kathy rather than Lina because Lina is the only reason holding Kathy back from being a star and being with Don. The mise-en-scene is very important because without the things it did to make the film better the film would be difficult to watch from the audience point of view....
