Ashley Hillstrom His: 200 Applied History Southern New Hampshire University March 23, 2022 The Haitian Revolution, largely inspired by the French Revolution, began in August of 1791 and lasted until January 1804. This revolution is often described as the largest, most successful slave rebellion of the Western Hemisphere. Toussaint L ’Overture, a former slave, led the rebellion until his capture and imprisonment in 1803. After Toussaint was capture, JeanJacques Dessalines, a general of Toussaint’s, took over and eventually declared independence from France on January 1, 1804. Without the strong leadership demonstrated by Toussaint L ‘Overture and his successor Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the Haitian Revolution would have perished and their independence from France would not have been achieved in 1804....
