Description

IRP Science INTRODUCTION: In our IRP, we were asked to perform an investigation on our scientific understanding of energy transformation and transfer. We needed to design a circuit model to investigate electricity generation. This could have been in different forms including: Wind, Water, Chemical or Solar. In my IRP project, I decided to do my investigation on chemical electricity, because it was interesting and I wanted a better understanding of how fruits and vegetables can be effective in the aspect of generating electricity. AIM: Which fruits/vegetables produces more electricity? (Using Lemon, Orange and Potato) HYPOTHESIS: I think that the lemon would have the most source of power to conduct electricity because it has higher levels of acidity than the other fruit and vegetable. MATERIALS: - 2 Alligator Clips - 1 Voltmeter - 1 Zinc nail or piece - 1 Copper piece - Scissors or a sharp tool Also needs the fruits and vegetable that I will be testing on such as the Lemon, Potato and Orange.

METHOD: 1. Set up equipment. 2. Grab a lemon and use your scissors or sharp tool to make 2 slits, 2cm apart. 3. Grab the zinc piece and place it inside the slit. 4. Place the copper piece on the other slit. 5. Attach 1 alligator clip to the zinc and 1 alligator clip to the copper piece. 6. Grab the voltmeter and set it up. 7. Attach the 2 alligator clips to the voltmeter in negative and positive. 8. Record observation and do repeated trials. 9. Repeat steps with another fruit or vegetable SAFETY: The sharp tools may be a risk when cutting slits into the ingredients, by accidently cutting yourself. To minimize risk, cut carefully and being patient. RESULTS: TRIAL 1 The Product

Whilst doing the experiment, the lemon and orange had seemed to conduct the most electricity because of

their high levels of acidity. However the potato wasn’t very high in acidity but it had power inside.

TREND: The trend is that the graph goes straight ahead. PATTERN: The pattern is that the there is one change involved in the trials. RELATIONSHIPS: The lemon and orange have similar results whilst the potato is low and doesn’t produce much energy.

DISCUSSION: The Hypothesis that I had aimed for was lemon being the most powerful source of energy to conduct electricity. My findings did support my hypothesis by a small amount, because the orange had similar ranking as the lemon and shows similar data. The findings that I found were on youtube and websites. Compared to mine they were very different since they used different tools and equipment but had similar method plans. During the experiment process, it was very time consuming and I had problems in changing the method continuously. I

was originally going to use a mini led light to see which fruits or vegetable conducted most of the energy, but I decided to restart and find out in a voltmeter instead since it was more accurate and a better testing product. I also had trouble in selecting the proper tools such as copper and zinc, I was originally going to use a zinc screw and an Australian dollar but I decided to use a copper and zinc piece since it was a bit bigger in size I thought it might work better which it did. To improve the experiment, I would do multiple trials in the experiment, using the proper equipment and knowing it’s purpose in the task. Time management and risk assessment. Using the equipment’s carefully and wisely and before conducting the experiment, checking many sources to see if my aim is reliable, accurate and worth testing and also seeing sources for hints and advice. CONCLUSION: InConclusion, the lemon and the orange were the most acidic and had conducted more electricity than the potato itself.
