Question 1 (Covey) – 17 marks

Briefly explain the following: 1.1 The power of a paradigm shift. [5] Aha moment – you break with old paradigms/ways of thinking. You see different, because you see different, you think different, because you think different, you feel different and because you feel different, you behave differently (1 mark for aha moment or break with old ways). A fundamental shift in thinking, seeing and understanding. It’s about changing attitudes and behaviours through seeing differently.

1.2 Why are the seven habits called habits of effectiveness? [2] The seven habits are based on principles and if they become part of one’s character, it leads to long-term beneficial results = you become a more effective person.

1.3 Circle of concern and circle of influence. [4] P82 – You can focus your time and energy in one of these circles. Proactive peope use proactive language (can and be) and work on the things they can change or do something about (direct control – regarding our own behaviour, first 3 habits). Proactive people try to enlarge their circle of influence and shrink their circle of concern. Reactive people focus on problems, things they have no control over and weaknesses of other people. They use reactive language – if only’s and have’s. Reactive people usually have a large circle of concern and allow things from outside to affect them on the inside = outside–in (“blame and shame”, victims).

1.4 The three human endowments that enable us to become leaders of our own. [3] Imagination – we visualise our own potential; conscience – drives our principles and actions; we combine the two with self-awareness to empower us to write our own script and not be scripted by others.

1.5 The problems we face fall in three areas. Name these areas.

[3]

Direct control problems are solved by mastering Habits 1, 2 and 3. Indirect problems are addressed by mastering Habits 4, 5 and 6. No control = accept and make peace
