Essay on Jackie Chan...

Description

Archeologists in Fiction The great Jackie Chan once said, “I'm tired of fighting. I've always known that I can't be an action star all my life.” As incredible as Chan may be, he understands that his career as an action star cannot last forever. So in a bold move to eliminate the risks of doing his own stunts, a successful cartoon series was developed in the year 2000. The series, aptly titled, Jackie Chan Adventures, follows a fictional representation of the famous action movie star as a relatively unknown archeologist. In the first season Jackie, along with his niece; Jade and his Uncle, wind up working for a secret organization as they fight to keep the twelve mystic talismans from the evil Dark Hand. Jackie’s knowledge of the talismans, as well as his mastery of the martial arts, leads him to a number of incredible adventures and archeological discoveries. One episode in particular called, “The Jade Monkey” is an excellent example of this. “The Jade Monkey” begins, much to Jade’s dismay, with Jackie telling her grade school class about the boring aspects of archeology such as using “tiny brushes” and spending “hours or even days” to brush the dirt off of different artifacts. In this scene, Jackie wears what he normally does in every episode, a blue sweater and khakis. He also talks with his regular Chinese accent and does this throughout the series. The show does a great job of making Chan look as humanized as possible with the exceptions being when showing his physique or when showing him performing martial arts. This is clearly a result of the fact that all archaeologists are in peak physical condition. In an attempt to make Jade feel better, Jackie takes her scuba diving in Micronesia to find the lost monkey talisman because child safety is for losers. Jackie and Jade soon dive into the Pacific Ocean. Although Jackie constantly reminds her that “archeology requires patience”, Jade finds the talisman in what appears to be seconds after descending to the ocean floor. Almost instantaneously, four henchmen of the Dark Hand show

up to claim the monkey talisman. Naturally, an underwater Kung Fu battle ensues. As the Dark Hand begins to close in on the talisman, an enormous tidal wave miraculously sends the six of them crashing onto a remote island. As Jade awakens, she discovers the monkey talisman in her pocket. While searching for her Uncle Jackie she is found by the Dark Hand. Luckily for Jade, she realizes that the monkey talisman has the secret ability to turn anything into an animal and turns herself into a monkey in an effort to elude her pursuitors. Unfortunately for Jade, not only can he not turn herself back because monkeys cannot speak, but the talisman is stolen by another monkey. When Jade finally finds Jackie, she also has trouble getting him to understand that it’s her. However, Jackie eventually figures it out and turns her back, but not before making the obvious, “I’m a monkey’s uncle” pun. Still, another battle between Chan and the Dark Hand ensues and everyone winds up turning into an animal, with the highlight of the episode being Jackie Chan boxing as a kangaroo. As a rabbit, somehow Jade turns everyone back to normal and the two of them make it off the island as safely as possible for a children’s cartoon. Unfortunately for Jade, she has no pictures to show her class for show-and-tell day so she ends up telling the same boring archeology facts as Jackie did the week before. This is an episode which, for the most part, required Jackie Chan to be an archeologist. Obviously he could just have been a secret agent on a mission, but having a seemingly boring occupation like an archeologist was necessary for adding humor to the story. This actually caught me off guard because although Jackie insisted that archeology was boring, they ended up going on an incredible adventure....
