While you have been working in the community for a while at the Brickville Community Development Corporation, your contacts have been somewhat limited to youth and families. This situation may require you to interact with other institutions in the community. Describe how you might approach other institutions to engage them and begin to build trust. Answer: I would use my social work experience at the CDC to reach the other institutions in Brickville. As a specialist with teens and adults through using civic opportunities, I would be able to apply my knowledge to other institutions such as the elderly. To promote this, I could start creating more activities geared towards the older community. I might try to include outdoor activities like stretches, water aerobics, painting classes, etc. to create a trusting relationship with more institutions in the community. 2. One of the challenges of social work is balancing various roles simultaneously. As a social worker that has been primarily involved in work with youth and families up to this point, describe some of your personal tensions, challenges, and rewards in broadening your sphere of influence to institutions in the community. Answer: In working with a small range of different groups, I deprive myself of opportunity. While working with teens and adults, I gain insight on these institutions. However, I am not allowing myself to experience the relationships that others in the community have to offer. To influence positively, I would need to branch out and expend my time and resources into those who I haven’t invested in previously. The rewards to broadening my sphere of influence is that I will build relationships in areas I am not used to. I might find it hard to connect to these different institutions, but I think the outcome will be worth it. 3. Some social workers with responsibilities at the micro level experience challenges in attempting to devote some of their energies to work at the macro level. Describe your main arguments for social work involvement at the community level. Answer: Social work involvement in the community is important because it promotes unity. As a social worker, I have the ability to influence the closeness of my community and the closer my community is,

the more united it is, and this allows the community to tackle struggles together. Practice at the community level can effect our own support system as well. The more relationships are built throughout the community, the easier it will become for realibility to take place. 4. How can you learn about the informal power and resources in the Brickville community? Answer: I can learn about the informal powers in Brickville is by watching the leaders of the town. Interacting with the mayor will help me learn the informal powers being put into place and allow me to note which are being used in leadership. This power varies from state to state and town to town. 5. What does it mean to "empower" community members in relation to the redevelopment plan in Brickville? Answer: Empowering means to build on community members’ strengths and allow them to use their strengths to partake in the community as a whole. We empower people so that they know their capabilities in contributing to the common good. We can delegate which member can contribute to certain parts of the redevelopment plan in Brickville based on their strengths and their experiences.
