Application Activity-Persuasive Speech Example-Organization Sanjay Rao This application activity is worth 11 points. Type out your answers to the questions below and upload the completed worksheet to canvas. It is based on the reading from chapters 23 and 24 in part 7 of the textbook and this week’s online materials, which can be found in canvas modules. You also have the option to complete this worksheet with a partner. See this week’s Canvas module for an opportunity to find one. The video stars John Cena and is titled “We Are America.” You can also find this video in the week 8 power point slides. A transcript is available here (the video is also embedded in that page). Watch the video and then answer the following questions: 1. What is his thesis? (Hint: “Love has no labels” is the name of the larger public service campaign. It is not his thesis). (2 pts) No. The thesis is “Patriotism is love for a country, not just pride in it…” 2. How can you identify it as a claim of value and not a claim of fact or claim of policy? Explain 1-3 sentences. (2 pts) It is a claim of value. 3. Name 2 pieces of evidence he uses to support his thesis and explain how the evidence supports his argument. (2 pts) The national demography and the national motto “E Pluribus Unum”, the statistics show the divisiveness, the composition and the consideration of all, America is diverse but we are all American we are all patriots, and we all need to love each. The motto is the same for all we are all American and we stand united under the constitution as equal. 4. Outline the 5 main parts of Monroe’s Motivated Sequences (as named in the textbook/on the PowerPoint slides) and include the following: Identify and explain where in the speech Cena fulfills each portion Monroe’s Motivated Sequence Quote, paraphrase, or cite something specific John Cena does or says to explain how John Cena is fulfilling that portion of Monroe’s Motivational Sequence. Do that for each main section of the speech. (that means you should be citing the speech 4-5 times). After you quote/cite the speech, explain how or why the part of the speech you chose helps Cena to fulfill that part of the sequence. I have listed the 5 sections you need below. Make sure you include each of the 3 parts listed in the bullet points above, for each of the 5 steps listed below: Attention (1 pt.): “ Patriotism. There’s a word thrown around a lot. It inspires passionate debate and is worn like a badge of honor.nd with good reason. Because it means love and devotion for one’s country. Love. For a word designed to unite, it can also be divisive.” The first part of the speech gives the feel of patriotism and collects attention, introduces the topic and declares its importance. Need (1 pt.): “You see, there’s more to patriotism than flag sequined onesies, and rodeos, and quadruple cheeseburgers. Patriotism is love for a country, not just pride in it.

But what really makes up this country of ours? What is it we love? It’s more than a huge rock full of animals like cougars and eagles, right?” He presents his thesis, adequately illustrates his subject, gives relevant ramifications and clearly points to the audience there stake. Satisfaction (1 pt.) : “And proud of it! We know that labels don’t devalue us, they help define us: keeping us dialed in to our cultures, and our beliefs, and who we are. As Americans. After all, what’s more American than the freedom to celebrate the things that make us us?” He demonstrates the concept. States his claim clearly, explains why this is so, gives in supporting references and surfaces out our diversity. Visualization(1 pt.): “I mean, it’s stitched into the stars and stripes of this country, from the Constitution, to Gettysburg, to our motto, “E Pluribus Unum”, from many, one. It’s even in our country’s name – the UNITED States.” He provides insight, practicality and benefits and provides a positive outlook of patriotism, the oneness. Call to Action (1 pt.): “And this year, whenever you feel the urge to don star spangled shorts, or set off fireworks the size of my biceps, to show love for our country, remember that to love America is to love all Americans. Because love has no labels.” He calls to the audience, to take the message deep, We are Americans, no other labels in between so love all Americans and his message is real....
