JOT2 Learner Analysis...

Description

JOT2 Learner Analysis Task 1 Part A Instructional Setting and Content Area I am providing remediation to a group of twenty third graders in a private school setting. The content area we are covering is math, specifically using strategies such as place value and properties of operations to multiply one-digit whole numbers with multiples of ten ranging from ten-ninety. This content is a third-grade standard and must be known prior to moving on to fourth grade. Part B Instructional Problem Five third grade students out of twenty are having problems with using the strategies associated with multiplying one-digit whole numbers with multiples of ten ranging from 10-90. These strategies are using place value and properties of operation. After seeing their work, it is clear they do not understand clearly how to use the strategies appropriately, leading them to the wrong answer. Part B-1 Instructional Goal Statement The twenty third grade students will be able to multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of ten ranging from 10-90 using strategies based on place value and properties of operations with a 100% accuracy using place value charts and digital math game on properties of operations. Part C – Learner Analysis C1 – Requisite Entry-Level Knowledge and Skills To achieve the goal, the students would need to know place value and how to use this in multiplication. They would also need to know what commutative, associative, and distributive properties are and be able to recall them from memory. The students have had exposure to both elements periodically throughout the year. Fifteen of the students needed a refresher and are ready to move on, five remain struggling. C2 – Prior knowledge and Skills A pre-test can be used to find the learner groups prior knowledge. I have developed one specifically to use to test this specific standard since this seems to be the one they have the most issue on. Skills I will be looking up are how students can apply place value and properties of operation to these sets of problems. A fourth of my students are struggling with how to use these strategies correctly in multiplication.

C3- Learner Group Unique Characteristics Unique characteristics for my learner group would be their upbringing and the fact this is a higher end private school. My students have parental support across the board. Most students are well above grade level. Most the third graders tested as fourth and fifth graders. My low end students still were testing as third grade which is on grade level. The students who are struggling are just not math oriented and excel in other areas. Motivations of these students are they want to be well prepared for fourth grade. They love to learn and want to understand more in math because it’s not their strongest suite. They are very willing to learn and look forward to coming to class. It is summer and sometimes motivation is a little lacking. C3A – Accommodating Unique Characteristics To accommodate the students, the school allowed me to have a summer remediation course to help the students prepare for fourth grade. This allowed me to go over math concepts that they were having trouble with and not able to do correctly. The goal of this is to ensure the students succeed and are fully ready for fourth grade since this standard is a third grade standard and must be learned. To help with motivation of the group, I have made some activities into games and allowed them to work in teams. One lesson involved a worksheet that you colored certain colors for different answers. They have access to math resources and also place value mats. Each group of students is broken up into 4 students per group, each group has one of the students struggling so they have student mentors. This also helps motivation for the student who is struggling. This has created a community of learners in my classroom. Part D Performance Context The performance context is for my instruction is for my third grade students at their school. I will be helping my students apply the strategies involving place value and properties of operations to multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of ten ranging 10-90. This is a necessary third grade standard that must be known so they can move on in fourth grade. Without this, they could struggle further in fourth grade and fall behind. The more they understand on multiplication, the easier it will be for them to succeed.
