Jimenez Journal #8 Kristina Jimenez Diaz-Cooper English 101 PP Embracing America The essay by Bharati Mukherjee entitled Two Ways to Belong in America was a passionate plea for immigrants to understand the strains of America that immigrants cause when they invade our country but refuse to contribute to it. The author Bharita explains the differences she has with her sister Mira on citizenship in the United States and Bharita thinks that immigrants in the United States should become citizens and not just be legal immigrantsand she wants them to understand the benefits of taking the path she chose. Her sister Mira wants to live in America her whole life and retire back to India, she wants to have the benefits of her green card but still maintain her Indian citizenship for when she retires. Mira keeps her heritage because that is her identity. She explains her sister is not rude or untrustworthy to Americans, but she also has no interest in becoming a citizen. Mukherjee seems to be primarily addressing a general American audience by offering a view of a two immigrants (herself and her sister) with radically different relationships to their adopted country. Moving to United States is huge achievement to an immigrant. Moving to US is one step to getting closer towards your goals. The sisters were able to take advantage of the educational system that America has to offer and one sister chose to embrace the life of an American and not have to bend to her parents every need as an Indian woman, like her sister, marrying an Indian man....
