QUESTIONS AND ANSWER ABOUT PLAY OEDIPUS REX ...
Journal Week 2 "Oedipus Rex"
Read lines 1-337.
How specifically did Oedipus become the King of Thebes?
What specifically is happening in Thebes that has everyone so worried?
What news does Kreon deliver? Before he tells Oedipus what he learned, what does he ask Oedipus?
Really look at Oedipus’ lines 245-314. What is the reason he gives for his lack of knowledge about Laius’ death, and what does he plan to do to the murderer once they are found?
What are your thoughts about the first section of the play? What, if anything, is troubling you that you would like for me to address in class?
Oedipus became the King of Thebes by killing his father and then he married his mom, but he was unaware that the person he killed was his father and that his now wife was his mother. Everyone is Thebes is worried because crops aren't doing well and aren't growing, people are sick, and their livestock are dying. Kreon brings news that their land (Thebes) is tainted. He says that the houses of guilty people can't be helped or saved if they don't get rid of the guilty persons in their homes. Oedipus wants the murderer to be found but he promises not to punish him with the death sentence, he will only exile him. He also offers a reward to anyone who can provide any information about the murderer.
So far I have enjoyed the first section, it can be a little difficult to read so I find myself reading a little slower to make sure I understand what is happening. I think the story is very complex and I am interested to see how it all plays out....
