Evaluation Plan The instructional unit that I will be evaluating is a Counting and Number Recognition 1-120 instructional unit for a homeschooled first grader. This student is my niece who is being homeschooled due to Covid19 and I assist her mother with her schooling. This unit functions as a summative assessment in counting and identifying numbers 1-120 in a variety of ways for engagement. This instructional unit is divided up into 3 tasks: 

Task 1: Student will be counting large quantities of objects up to 120 of random manipulatives.

Task 2: Use a 1-120 counting chart to look at and understand the pattern of counting

Task 3: Student will use her problem-solving skills to put together a broken 1-120 counting chart puzzle

The content in this instructional unit is administered in a variety of ways, for example, using tangible manipulatives and games for increased engagement. Once the instructional unit is finished, the student will be completing assessments such as exit tickets and performancebased assessments. Description of Audience The participant of this assessment is a 1st grade, 7-year-old girl, who is being homeschooled by her mother and I, using the Abeka curriculum. The student has a desk in the corner of the living room that she does most of her schoolwork at. It can be difficult to motivate this student to want to do her work, although she mostly enjoys math and feels a bit more confident in this subject, she complains that it can be boring. She also has a hard time focusing on her work with her 2-year-old sister wanting to be where she is and play and distract her. This also goes along with her attitudes toward doing schoolwork. She is homeschooled this year because of Covid19 and really misses

being around her friends in her class, so she can get sad sometimes about missing out. I think this makes a huge impact on her motivation and attitude towards learning. This student learns best when she the content is engaging and offers movement. Type and Purpose of Evaluation A formative evaluation will be conducted on the Counting and Recognizing 1-120 Instructional unit for this 1st grader. The unit is aligned with the Washington State Common Core Standards for math for this grade. The goal of this evaluation is to revise and improve the material for this Instructional Unit so that the student can be successful in being able to comprehend counting and number recognition 1-120 in a fun and engaging way. Evaluation Questions 1.

Were the materials reasonable in meeting the performance objectives for this instructional

unit? 2.

Was the material and directions easy to understand?

3.

Was the student engaged in the content?

4.

What section of the instructional unit was the most difficult to this student?

5.

Do you have any recommendations for revisions of the material presented or the format for

which it was presented to the student?

Potential Interview I personally would be leading the interviews since this student is being homeschooled by her mother and myself. A subject matter expert will be the interviewee, so that expert will be the one participating and responding to the interview questions. The goal of this interview is to gather any information about this instructional unit and how it can possibly be tweaked and revised so that the student can be even more successful during the instructional unit. By administering this interview, I

hope to gain to insight of any weaknesses or any strengths that I could revise or improve in the instructional unit. Interview Questions 1. Were the directions to the student clear and concise? 2. What do you think the weaknesses in the instructional unit? 3. What would you add or get rid of in the instructional unit? If any, can you explain? 4. Do you feel that the student was engaged through the duration of the instructional unit? Why or why not? 5. What do you think the student struggled with the most in the instructional unit? 6. What do you think the student thrived in the most in the instructional unit? 7. Was the pacing of the instructional unit appropriate to this grade level? 8. Was the instructional content and manipulatives appropriate to this grade level? Type of Interview The chosen interview for my evaluation purposes is a selected open response questions to be conducted in a semi-structured manner, rather than closed-ended questions. Using open response questions allows me to collect qualitative, open-ended data and allows the interviewees more opportunities to fully express their thoughts. Asking open response questions for this interview is more beneficial to me because it provides me with more in-depth answers. Using the closed-ended questions would not give me the amount of detail that I want in order to revise and improve my instructional unit. Closed-ended questions would only give me yes or no or multiple-choice answers and in order to revise and improve my instructional unit, closed-ended wouldn’t work. I believe that using open response questions would be much more beneficial in revising my instructional unit for the 1st graders can be more successful in their math.

Potential Questionnaire/Survey A potential questionnaire is related to the instructional unit that is being evaluated: Counting and Number Recognition 1-120, is provided in the Appendix. The goal of this questionnaire is to collect more specific information regarding the instructional unit. By administering this questionnaire, I am hoping to gain more insight on how I can make the instructional unit more engaging and be successful. I am also hoping that this questionnaire gives me more information so that I can revise and improve the unit so that more educators and students can benefit from this concept. As the person teaching the student math, I will be administering the questionnaire and I would have a subject matter expert complete the instrument, the questionnaire.

Appendix Questionnaire or Survey This questionnaire will help in the evaluation to revise and improve the instructional unit: Counting and Recognizing Number 1-120. Please be honest in your responses and write in your answers. 1. How can the instructional unit be more engaging for the learner? Please include any suggestions. 2. Was the unit and the instructions easy to follow and apply? Do you believe that other teachers or substitutes would be able to follow the instructions easily? 3. Do you believe that the instructional unit should be shortened or extended? 4. What do you believe the student struggled with the most? Why? 5. Were the instructional content and manipulatives appropriate and aligned to the grade level? 6. What do you think the weaknesses are in this instructional unit? If any, can you explain? Thank you very much for taking the time to fill out this survey, this is greatly appreciated. This questionnaire with be of great use in revising and improving this instructional unit....
