Description

Juxtaposition: Independent Poetry -So far, I have introduced the literary device of "juxtaposition," you have analyzed different examples and you have discovered and described examples that you found on your own. -Now, you will write your own poem that contains a clear example of juxtaposition. Juxtaposition (noun) (pronounced juhk-stuh-puh--zish--uh-n) is the placement of two or more things side by side, often in order to bring out their differences. The juxtaposition could be shocking, humorous, or just plain strange. Regardless, this literary term calls attention to two distinctly different things by placing them right beside one another, or juxtaposing (verb) them.

DIRECTIONS: PLEASE BEGIN A NEW DOCUMENT TO WRITE YOUR POEM! 1. Your poem must be at least 20 lines long, be reflective of your current level of education and show evidence of thoughtfulness and planning. (10 points) 2. Your poem DOES NOT have to rhyme. Or, it can contain partial rhyming elements. 3. Your poem should contain a clear juxtaposition of 2 different “things” (ideas, concepts, emotions, characters etc.) Some suggested common juxtapositions are the following: They say that vampires are blood sucking demons with no heart but is that true? Evil lurks in the night so be careful before you get bite. I remember when my grandfather will tell me stories about them He wanted me to be scared to sleep Make me feel all vamps are evil but I always thought twice. All these scary stories and movies about vampires can portray lies I always believed in the supernatural but no one really did and if they do exist they are all evil. I was too much of a believer and I had to prove myself right about vampires' existence and how they can be nice. Every creature that is created from mother nature can be both good and evil. But how can mother nature create such evil?

One that can’t have humanity? One that can’t be saved? How do we not know that they were created to eliminate us from the danger and hurt we have done to this earth that graciously embraced us My grandfather said even though vampires exist they cannot be good They are pure evil, sucking blood from innocent human veins. How do you just claim that all vampires are bad Look at humanity at itself we are the true mal We are the ones who murder innocent lives because of our greed. We take without remorse and we shed more blood than any vampire can do. I am a believer in the supernatural I know that all vampires are not evil and when people start to point fingers I would tell them they should look in their mirrors and see who is better vampires or humans.

good/evil freedom/imprisonment before/after (shows growth or lack of) determined/inactive joyful/sorrowful

fulfilled/unfulfilled success/failure aware/unaware winter/summer rich/poor

4. After you have finished your poem, please do the following: (10 points) In a paragraph (5-7sentences), please provide a thorough explanation of the use of juxtaposition in your poem. What two “things” are you comparing/contrasting through the use of juxtaposition? What message/messages are you trying to convey to your reader? Support your explanation with specific examples from your own poem. In my poem the use of juxtaposition was the comparison between vampires and humans. We are taught that all vampires are evil and they are heartless. They are known as the undead and once a blood a sucking vampire is always a blood sucking vampire. However, I wanted to ask the audience who do you think

is the real evil ‘vampires or humans’. Humans have caused so much destruction to mother nature. How do we not think if vampires are created to eliminate human beings because of the damage they have done to the world. The blood that is constantly being shed everyday, innocent humans being tortured in camps and nuclear bombs killing hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. But humans make vampires look like the true evil even though we really are....
