Description

Cory Gain KCP1- TASK 1 April 22, 2020

(A) One possible revision for the guided practice portion of the instructional lesson plan that may benefit Michael would be a small group activity. Students with ads that they believe to be positive together in one group, and students with negative advertisements together in another group. In these small groups students will present their ads, and one by one put a checkmark next to the criteria that indicates whether or not their ad is positive/negative. After they have all finished this, they will present their findings to the whole class. This will give Michael the social interaction that he benefits from, as well as a more in depth academic activity.

(B) A second activity revision from this lesson plan would include a small group activity based on the type of ad the students have selected. Each group representing a different type of ad (tv, newspaper, television, etc). By adding this further classification of information, Michael will gather a better understanding of each type of ad as well as the requirements set by the KSTP

channel 5 news.

(B1) This change in activity is justified because of information laid out in Michael’s IEP. Michael has shown to be more successful and attentive to academic activities when it is a group activity. Given that Michael does not enjoy independent reading, allowing him the opportunity to read and complete an activity with peers will give him the motivation to complete the activity as well as be fully attentive to academic information.

(C) One accommodation for Michael regarding the summative assessment would be an overview of how to organize an editorial. According to Michael’s IEP, he struggles with independent writing and writing organization. By allowing him to view multiple examples of how to organize his writing, Michael will have more opportunities to be successful in this particular activity.

(D) A revision of the assessment would include giving Michael the option to create a multimedia presentation, rather than write an editorial. Rather than

cause Michael unnecessary frustration with the task, allowing him to creatively share his newly learned information will give him the opportunity to be successful. The requirements laid out in the assessment rubric would not need to change.

(D1) According to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development , giving students choices in the classroom not only improves their attitude towards academics, but also benefits their autonomy as well as their intrinsic motivation. By giving Michael the opportunity to present the information he has learned in a way that highlights his strengths, instead of putting a spotlight on his weaknesses, we are encouraging his academic engagement and overall joy for learning. Michael is an intelligent student with many strengths, moving forward it is important to let Michael capitalize on these strengths, so as to ensure that his motivation for learning continues to grow. (Mike Anderson, 2016)

(E) Michael’s general education teachers and SPED teachers should be meeting on a bi-weekly basis to ensure that Michael is receiving necessary support in his inclusion classes. Michael’s short term goals should be

discussed in these meetings, as well as any behavioral changes that have been noticed. Giving Michael choices when it comes to his own learning, and the option to lean on his strengths during academic activities will help his self confidence as well as his autonomy. Michael struggles with independent reading and reading comprehension, but excels in listening comprehension. The SPED and general education teachers need to be sure that they are giving Michael every opportunity to be successful in the classroom, as well as increase his joy for learning.
