ExpandedCourseDescription: Anexaminationofthecomponentsandprinciplesofhealthandfitnesswithparticularattentiontomethodsof evaluationandmodification.Topicsalsoincludechronicdisease,mentalhealth,nutrition,environmentalhealth, nationalandglobalinitiativesinhealthpromotion,fitnesstestprotocolsforoccupationalandsportsapplications andcertificationsforfitnessprofessionals.Throughthelaboratorycomponent,studentswillobserve,learn,and developpracticalskillsforadministrating,andinterpreting,avarietyofhealthandfitnessassessment procedures.Studentswillgainadeeperunderstandingoflifestyleandfitnesscounselling.Studentswill personallyundergomodified(accordingtowhatweareabletosafelyfacilitateduetoCOVID‐19)healthand fitnessassessmentsand/orbeexposedtosimulationdataforinterpretationofexercisetests,etc.inthe laboratorysessionsinasmallgroupsetting.
CourseLearningObjectives: Thepurposeofthiscourseistoprovideanoverviewofimportantinformationtoassiststudentsindeveloping anunderstandingofthemainconceptsintheareasofhealthandfitness. Thespecificobjectivesofthecoursearethatstudentswillbeableto: Demonstrateabreadthanddepthofknowledgeinhealthandfitness Demonstrateknowledgeoftheterminologyandnomenclatureinhealthandfitness Workindividuallyorinagrouptoobtainandanalyzefitnessandhealthdata. Applypracticalskillsforassessingfitness,health,andmovement.
CourseStructure(asynchronousandsynchronouslearning): Lectures LecturesareMondays,Wednesdays,andeveryotherFridaysSECTIONA:8:30‐9:20amEST;SECTIONB:9:30‐ 10:20amEST.Pleaseseefullclassschedulepostedonline(eClass). Laboratories Laboratoriesare**BIWEEKLY**andIN‐PERSON/synchronous(i.e.,youattendyourIN‐PERSONlabseveryother weekonlyinthetimeslotindicatedonyourofficialtimetable).Laboratoriesaremandatorytoattend.All laboratorieswilltakeplaceinHNES018.Pleasecheckyourcoursetimetabletofigureoutwhichlabyouare registeredfor.Youmustonlyattendyourscheduledlaboratory,andnoothers.Permissionmaybegrantedby theTAaheadoftimeforyoutoattendanotherlabbutonlyunderextenuatingcircumstances,andonacase‐by‐ casebasis.ThereisNOvirtualLaboratoryoption. YoureClasssitewillonlyallowyouaccesstothelabsectionthatyouareregisteredfor(ifyoudonotseeyour labsectiononyoureClass,pleaseletusknowviatheKine1020email).Laboratorysessionswillbeledbyyour TA.PleasekeepaneyeoneClassforcorrespondenceaboutyourparticularlabsectionfromyourTA.YourTA’s nameandemailaddresswillbepostedundertheLaboratorysectionontheeClasswebpage.
Foralllabs,pleasedressinappropriateclothing(e.g.,athleticclothing,comfortabletomoveinclothing)and comepreparedwiththeappropriateworksheetsprintedoreasilyaccessibleonadevice.Theworksheetscanbe foundoneClass.Theywillbepostedbeforethetwo‐weekwindowofeachlab.Additionally,anemailreminder willbesentoutabouteachlabbytheLaboratoryCoordinatorsalsojustbeforethe2‐weekwindowofanewlab. Westronglyencouragestudentstobecomefamiliarwitheachlab'sobjectivesandrequiredmaterialsbeforethe labsotheycanmaximizetheirlearningduringthelab. Eachlabis~2‐hoursinlength(abitlessthan2hourstoaccountforcleaninganddisinfectingbetween laboratories).EachlaboratoryisassignedtooneTAwhoyouwillworkwithandlearnfromduringyour laboratories.PleasecheckyourYorkUniversityprovidedschedule/timetableforyour2‐hourlabsection.Itwill beina2‐hrslotonaweekday(excludingFridays)between8:30AMand8:30PM.Laboratoriesruneveryother week.OddnumberlaboratorygroupsforbothlecturesectionsAandB(i.e.,1,3,5,7,9….etc.)willmeetforlab 1theweekofSeptember13thwhileevennumberlaboratorygroupsforbothlecturesectionsAandB(i.e.,2,4, 6,8,10….etc.)willmeetforlab1theweekofSeptember20th.Intotal,thiscoursehas12labstocompleteover thefullyear(6intheFalltermand6intheWinterterm). Evaluations: 1. LaboratoryParticipation&Hand‐Ins(20%): Labattendanceismandatory(seebelow)andstudentsareexpectedtoprepareinadvancebyreadingthe providedlabhandoutsbeforethestartoftheirlabsession.Studentswillbeevaluatedonattendanceand participation.AllSTUDENTSMUSTPARTICIPATEintheirlabsattheirassignedtimeslots.ThereareNOvirtual labs(i.e.,thereisNOwayforyoutoattendyourlabvirtually).Labsaredeliveredin‐persononly,exceptfor Lab1whichwillbeonline.Itisstronglyencouragedthatyouattendallthelabssothatyouaremost preparedfortheexams. SubmittingyourLabHand‐Ins:Youmusthandinyourlaboratoryassignment/reportonline(viaeClass) within24hoursfromtheENDofyourrespectivelaboratory.ALLsubmittedworkforKINE1020mustinclude yourfullname,studentnumber,labgroupnumberandTA'sname;pleasetaketimetolearnandremember yourLaboratorynumberandyourTA’sname.Oncesubmitted,theassignmentswillbetime‐stampedand lateassignmentswillnotbegraded.AssignmentsareonlytobesubmittedasworddocumentsorPDFs. Grading:Youwillbegradedequallyonyourparticipationineachlaboratoryandthequalityoftheworkyou hand‐in.Togethereachlaboratoryisvaluedat2%ofyourfinalgrade(1%forlaboratoryattendanceand1% forcompletedworksheet).Youcanmisstwolaboratoriesforpersonalreasons,withoutpenalty,andeach
additionalmissedlabbeyondthatforANYreasonwilleachresultinalossof2%.Yourtop10gradesfrom thelabswillbecountedforamaximumof20%ofyourfinalgrade. AccommodationsforIn‐personlaboratories:Studentswhocannotattendin‐personlabs,mustgivea writtenrequesttotheirTAforaccommodation(whichmayincludethepossibilityofattendingalabat anothertimeslot,howeverthisisnotguaranteed).TimelycommunicationwithyourTAisexpectedfor accommodationtobeprovided.Requestsforaccommodationgivenover1weekafterthelabwillnotbe consideredbarringexceptionalcircumstances. Studentswithapprovedaccommodationsforin‐personattendance,candoasummaryofthelabalongwith therelevantworksheetstoearn2%foreachlaboratory.Again,thereiscurrentlynoonlineoptionforthe laboratorycomponent.Approvedstudentswillreceivethedataforthecase‐studiesfromtheirTAsothat theycancompletetheworksheetsontheirown.Unlessthereareextenuatingcircumstances,thesummaries andcompletedworksheetsmustbehandedinoneClasswithin24hoursofthecompletionofyournormally scheduledlab.Incaseswherethatisnotpossible,suchassuddenand/orprolongedillness,studentscan discussspecificaccommodationsneededwiththeirTAonacase‐by‐casebasis. Theaccommodatedlaboratoryworkwillbemarkedasfollows:Worksheetwillbeworth1%andthelab summarywillbeworth1%fortotalof2%perlab.Summariesshouldbenomorethan2pagesdoublespaced andwillbegradedasfollows:completenessandcorrectness–50%;grammar–25%;formatting–25%. Worksheetswillbegradedforcorrectness.Thesecanbehandwrittenortyped.Pleasenotethatallwork mustbelegibletobegraded. 2.
