1. The concept of theory-based knowledge (3), as described in (Harms & Pierce, 2020), refers to theories that attempt to categorize human actions in frameworks to explain events around them and how individuals act in their environments (23). A counselling-related example of this concept would be a therapist interacting with a client and they are aware of the theory that expresses that humans are dynamic and shaped by their situations, which is the basis of the interpretive theory, and this paradigm would affect how the worker would assess the client’s situation (45). 2. The concept of practice knowledge (2) as described in (Harms & Pierce, 2020), refers to the knowledge that has been proven useful which has been acquired by human service workers on the job from past experience (21). A counselling-related example of this concept is a human service worker dealing with a current client and looking back on a situation and remembering information that pertains to the current one and utilizing it to help the client (31). 3. The concept of self-care as described in (Harms & Pierce, 2020), refers to the duty of human service workers to actively contribute to their mental and physical wellbeing in order to combat the stresses that come with their occupation. A counselling-related example of this concept is a worker talking to their own therapist or counselor regularly about their problems in order to keep up with their mental health. 4. The concept of group social identity (3), as described in (Ng, 2004), refers to the way individuals are associated and are identified with certain groups in society (15). A counselling-related example of this concept is a client identifying as a lower class transgender, black female (10).

5. The concept of cultural awareness, as described in (D’Andre, & Daniels, 2001), refers to the act of being aware of cultural differences and how these differences will affect people and how they interact with the world (22). A counselling-related example of this concept is a human service worker being aware that their client is an immigrant and in their native land there are fewer women rights and women are seen as inferior, the awareness of this will in turn shape conversations and should be understood by the worker (44).

6. The concept of oppression (1), as described in (Hays, 2015), refers to a societal group being marginalized due to the power that a majority group holds and the systems set in place by them(22). A counselling-related example of this concept is a human service worker that was been oppressed and her interaction with a client that happens to be an oppressor. (19)

One key idea that relates to multiple concerts covered this week would be self-analysis of human service workers. This key idea links the concepts of, group identity, cultural awareness and oppression. These topics all relate to the idea that human service workers should be aware of their place in society and this could be classified as responsibilities or expectations that come with the job or actions that would better the experience of the worker and the client. These practices and mindset also help to facilitate change in clients, specifically understanding your cultural differences and how oppression affects individuals can help you respond to clients appropriately and use your position to encourage social justice (Harms & Pierce, 2020)(113) One thing that I learned from the reading that is valuable to me in my education and future work would be the importance of picking up knowledge as you gain experience in your field but also the danger of attempting to apply the same solution to every situation. It also speaks of the importance of not generalizing because that takes can cause you to miss unique challenges and differences in different situations (72).

One thing that I need more understanding in would be the critical theory (Harms & Pierce, 2020). I will learn more about this theory by rereading the text and looking up examples of this theory can be applied in real life. Also thinking about how it compares and contrasts with the other two theories can provide insight. (54)
