Your choice culture assignment...
Kwakiutl I have chosen the Kwakiutl culture to write my papers on. They are located in British Columbia and their language is Kwak'wala. The Kwakiutl people practice potlatching on the coast of British Columbia (Kottak 2012: 313). Their culture is divided into family groups called na’mina, which stands for “one of a kind”. Another cultural characterisitc is their art. Primarily made from cedar wood, Kwakiutl people make totems and masks (everyculture.com). The main thing that led to me choosing this culture was their value of individualism. When doing my map of cultures, I noticed that many cultures rely on hierarchies and putting certain genders, ages, and classes above one another. Upon further research on the Kwakiutl I found very little data that showed that they followed those same beliefs but rather thought of individuals as "one of a kind".
