CMPH 211- Lab#2 Understanding Virtual Machine settings _________________________________________________________________________________________

Deliverable: Learners will develop an understanding of virtual machine settings, and how they impact the performance of the virtual machine and the host operating system. Objectives: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Start a version of a VM operating system. Navigate the menus within VMware Workstation software. Take correct screen capture process. Create a properly formatted document for submission to D2L.

Before you begin This lab will be performed on your laptop. Before you begin this lab activity, you will need to know how to take a screen capture in Windows: Use Screen “Snipping Tool” or “Snip & Sketch”, built into the Windows 10 host OS, Or, to take a screen capture in Windows you need to press the “Print Screen” or “PrtSc” key on your keyboard. This will capture an image of your desktop in the clipboard. Then open Microsoft Word from Start – Word, or Start – Run – type winword in the text field then click ok to start a new Microsoft Word document. Inside the blank Microsoft Word document right click your mouse in the whitespace and select paste to paste the screen capture from the clipboard. You may also use either of these key combinations “Shift + Insert” or “Ctrl + V”. Note: You do not need to press the “+” key in these combinations. If you want to take a screen capture of the currently active window then press the Alt + PrtSc keys and paste into Word document as mentioned above. Take screen captures where it is mentioned. Screen captures must show your Student ID as machine names mentioned in the Lab Guidelines on D2L. Otherwise, no marks.

Resources: You will require a laptop or a desktop with VMware Workstation  

Windows 10 ISO image And a newly created VMware Virtual Machine (VM)

Assuming, you have already downloaded the Windows.iso image using Microsoft “Windows 10 Media Creation tool” as described in the document posted on D2L. You could also download Windows 10 Education edition from SAIT “Azure Dev Tools for Teaching” following this link; https://eacademy.ict.sait.ca/Default.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f

Preparing the Virtual Machine for installation of the Windows 10 operating system Procedure: 1.

Launch VMware Workstation.

2.

Build a New Virtual Machine for Windows 10 64bit. If you have already installed Windows 10 during demonstration, you can use the same Virtual Machine. You can ignore “Installing the Windows 10 Operating System” below and can directly jump over to “Starting the VM for use in learning VMware menus”.

3.

Ensure name of your virtual machine is according to the naming convention outlined in the “CMPH 211 Lab Guide” on D2L. Use the default location for your virtual machine files or create a folder of your choosing.

Note: It is your responsibility to keep a record of where you store your VMs.

Installing the Windows 10 operating system Procedure: 1.

Make sure that your new Virtual Machine is selected on the left pane and then click Power on this virtual machine. If you have problem consult the demonstration from your previous class.

2.

You should now see some options for installing the operating system

3.

Click on the Next button to accept the default settings

7. Select the Windows 10 Pro operating system, and click on the Next button. 8. Read “Microsoft Software License Terms” to understand license agreement. Note: “End User License Agreement (EULA)” EULA stands for End User License Agreement. 9. Accept the license terms and click Next to continue.

10. 11.

Carefully read and review the two types of installations that are available. Select the option that is best suited for a new system build “Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)”. 12. Allow Windows to create the partition structure it needs in the “unallocated space”. Note: The partition structure will be created, and the system files will begin to copy. 13. 14.

Select Canada as your region. Make a selection for the Keyboard, US is typical unless you have a different keyboard. 15. Select “Skip” for a second keyboard layout. 16. Select the “set up for personal use option” and click Next to continue. 17. Select the “Offline account” option.

Read all the steps before doing anything. You will require screen captures at specific time during the process. 1. From your host machine (laptop/desktop). navigate to the following web-site: a.

https://www.userbenchmark.com/

b. Download the Free Download, and execute the program. c. This program will benchmark your host machine (physical machine). Perform a screen capture (SC#1) of the results from your physical host. Example of a screen capture is as one shown below.

2. With the virtual machine you created in Lab #1, power it off. 3. Navigate to the Virtual Machine Settings within VMWare. 4. Ensure you can access the Internet. 5. Modify the settings so the memory of the VM is 1 GB, and number of processors is 1. 6. Start the VM. 7. Using a browser within the VM, navigate to this web-site: a.

https://www.userbenchmark.com/ or copy it from your host machine. If you have already downloaded it.

b. Download the Free Download, and execute the program. SAIT Last updated: 11 August 2021

9. Increase the number of cores and memory for the VM, as suggested in the table. You’ll have to power the virtual machine off between changing the numbers.

10. Complete the table for the Virtual machine. Increase the number of cores, and allocated RAM to as high as possible. Be careful; you may have to force shut down of the VM. It may become extremely slow. Analysis: Answer the questions below: 1. How does the VM performance change as the number of CPU cores and memory increases? a. Why? 2. Can you notice a change in the performance of the host operating system when changing the virtual machine settings? a. Why? 3. Can you change the VM settings so they are the same as the physical, or host, machine’s settings? a. Is the VM usable? Why, or why not? b. What happens to the performance of the physical/host machine? Submissions: Do not save your screen captures to this document! Create a separate Microsoft Word document containing your titles, descriptions & screen captures. Save that document and close it. Submit to D2L/Brightspace for Lab 2. This lab will be marked by the following marking scheme. No mark will be provided if screen captures or answers are not correct and identifiable by your Student ID.  One screen capture of performance benchmark of your physical host. (1 mark)  Table of performance. (7 marks)  Analysis (4 marks for 4 answers)
