Unit 4: Labor Systems, 1450 - 1750 C.E. Encomienda ● Define the labor system ● Include the general role/purpose ● Were there revolts or rebellions associated with it?

The Labor System was ran by 12the Spanish and it rewarded conquerors with the labor of conquered non-Christian peoples. The original intent of the system was to reduce the abuses of forced labor Popes Rebellion and The Pueblo revolt began due to this system.

Chattel Slavery This was the labor system imposed upon the African People who were brought to the Americas that was in the process of development by the Europeans, this system is most commonly known as slavery The original purpose was to speed up the process of building European colonies in the newfound Americas. African peoples were rounded up and shipped off to America and Sold as goods.

Russian Serfdom The Russian Serfdom was a system similar to slavery except for the slaves (more or less peasants of Russia) were sold with the land to which they were “attached” This system was developed to allow serfs (peasants) to eventually buy land and gain rights just as a free citizen would have such as the right to own property, or a business, or even marry without consent. Pugachvs rebellion was a result of serfdom.

Slave Rebellions and the Civil War were the results of this forced labor system.

When was this type of labor system abolished or when did it lose significance?

It was not officially abolished until the late 18th century, but in September of 1721, The Encomienda system was prohibited.

Following Union victory in May 1685, along with the ratification of the 13th Amendment, Chattel slavery was officially and effectively ended in December of 1865.

1861 was when the serfdom officially ended with the Emancipation Manifesto (March 3rd [February 19th, Old Style], 1861) which was issued by Alexander II.

Before Spanish: Labor before was to honor the empire, usually community-driven projects like extensive road work and military service.

A contract 2 individuals sign in which one doesn’t work for money, but to pay off a loan, or favor. There was no revolt mentioned

This was designed to keep people that were in debt to continue working on a piece of land. The people who used and exploited these people became overtly rich with the profits of their land.
