MECHANISM OF ACTION: Relief constipation & decreases blood ammonia levels INDICATIONS: Chronic constipation, Ammonia toxicity, Hepatic encephalopathy CONTRAINDICATIONS: Low galactose diets PERTINENT LABS TO MONITOR: Ammonia, glucose, K, Na. ROUTES: PO
RECOMMENDED DOSAGE RANGE: 15-30 max 60mL/day as liquid/ 10-20 max 40g/day suspension (Adults),
7.5mL/day (kids). Common side-effects
Life-threatening side effects
Belching, cramps, abdominal distention, flatulence Diarrhea, hyperglycemia
Nursing Implications/Patient and family teaching: Take w/ juice, full glass water, milk citrus beverage to improve flavor Encourage to use other bowel regulations – increase diet fiber, fluid intake & mobility Notify MD if diarrhea occurs or persist.
What focused assessment should be performed prior to administration to ensure the medication is safe to give? LOC, Skin tugor, BM/sounds WHY? Risk for diarrhea & dehydration
Interactions: Don’t use w/ other laxatives Anti-infectives may decrease effectiveness in hepatic encephalopathy Tx
